My fravourite ball pein hammer has had insulation tape wrapped round its handle for at least 25 years, replaced every so often, but stopped the split handle from getting any worse. There is another similar hammer that is slowly working its way into my favour but it's still not quite the first one I pick up. When I was doing timber framing as a job it took me a while to find a decent hammer and ended up with a Stanley which had a longer handle than most, it's still around but over the years the rubber handle is worn right through to the inner shank, it's loose but it's still the hammer I go to when knocking staples and nails even though the striking face isn't quite square anymore!
