Doesnt sound much of a loss, another Herbert that's gets erect over 200 hos and flashing lights, did he take his number plate out of the front window?
I remember going to lead silage for a dairy farm while they milked, jumped on a MF 6170 on row crops with a dodgey clutch and a missing side window, while 1 lad moaned that he didn't get to drive the "new tractor"

Oh no, I had a number plate :(
Twenty years ago so maybe cool then maybe?

Bugger:oops:
Only had one flashing light though.

Employee was mid 20’s, have 6 more employees on that department, was a v good operator but has a history off huffing when didn’t get his way. Always has to drive the newest kit and wants to do everything.
The ‘new’ tractor is usually his but he was supposed to do a bit of haulage today and I wanted to use the tractors with the poorer tyres and to save hooking the one pass off.
You will get more out of the other 6 without him those types cause alot of unnecessary problems behind the scenes

Although I suspect that the one thing that we both realise is that in the modern world telling an employee to go home might not be the end of something, but the start of something (quite expensive)...........

I'll bet he turns up at starting time in the morning, with his furious mother in tow.
At which point you should ask her if she's to blame for raising the petulant little shite

Absolutely agree. When we had the dairy we had three frontline tractors. Main tractor driver drove the biggest and newest (he was the one that clocked up the hours), I drove the one and the 3rd was used by our 2nd tractor driver/farmworker. That was a position we could never fill with a long term employee. The result was that the tractor fell into a state. Partly my fault as my machine, but high turnover of driver meant it was never really looked after.

One thing sat in your own mess, another sat in someone elses

Enforce minimum standards of cleanliness and equipment maintenance across the workforce.

Workers who think they own their work vehicles are a pain in the ass, spitting the dummy when business needs require them to drive something else.

Biggest problem I 've seen is when they play merry hell when someone else drives "their "machine -they like to make themselves" indispensable " , once saw the boss sweep the wheel marks after he put the tractor back in the shed ! , another one of his drivers let all the engine oil out for change with key in ignition then he went on holiday for a week !
and as for the back stabbing !

Yep. Worked a haulage contract where some drivers would take the ignition keys home at night/weekends. Was great fun trying to manage them...

Life so unfair isn't it, my one employee is hard working, no job is below him, it's to do so let's get it done attitude. Will pick up a tool with a shaft if the engine won't go. He's a single parent and had to take more time to look after his kids. He's trying his best to work out ways to keep his hours up and not dump me in it. I'm totally flexible with him as will be nearly impossible to replace him, even to fill the time he's not there.

Your guy simply doesn't know how lucky he is! (Or was if you've taken it as resignation )

I’d be telling em they’d have to pay the cost of a replacement hire truck.

I agree. Unfortunately the national and regional shortage of HGV drivers meant I didn't have the backing of top management if I attempted such robust action.

One of several reasons why I left the company and now work as a freelance driver.

Doesn't matter now. Have no dairy and have no tractor driver. I get to drive all three!!! Biggest enemy is the old man
