MS office 2007

Currently running office 2007 with no problems at all , and fully suited with it - does everything I need . What are the group's feelings about office 2007 now that , as I understand it , MS are withdrawing security updates ? Just pay up and go up to date , or install one of the freebies . ( Libre? ) If anybody has done this is it satisfactory or a real PIA? I read that the freebies are W compatible -- but are they easily so -- or a lot of grief caused in the process ?

I'm using WPS Office at home at the moment; it's incredibly similar to MS Office and I quite like it. The free version occasionally pushes easy to close adverts on to the computer but they don't seem too intrusive and can be removed with a licence fee. I'm also using Google Docs and find that even better. My wife had a trial copy of the latest Office package (365 I think) and we won't be paying the Microsoft fee for it any time soon.

I personally do not like the idea of putting anything online so would never user Office 365.

Secondly Office 365 is a subscription, you are always paying for software updates I've never needed. If you are like me and use the same technology which has been around for 20 years why am I paying every year ?

After looking around for some time we ended up using Open Office.

It's free by default but you can also donate.

I agree on not wanting anything cloud based, not least for when t’internet is down, as happens occasionally out in the country.

My Office 2000 program stopped working a couple of years ago, so I had to do something. I tried the freebie programs and really didn’t like any of them. Microsoft try to push you towards subscription packages these days, but you can still get desktop versions of Office. I’m on Office 2013 now, which I’m perfectly satisfied with.

as with anything if it does what you want it to do then leave well alone, with the older versions of office make sure you install the compatibility viewer from Microsoft, (free download) as long as you have a backup copy you can reinstall if anything goes wrong.

Thanks for the replies . I have no problem with what I have , but everybody seems paranoid about malware and security , I was simply asking opinions . I have the full Kasperski suite installed , and run malwarebytes occasionally , and apart from a couple of PUP s that got removed I've never found anything amiss . I run 2 separate weekly 1TB drives as backup alternately I would simply like to be prepared .

There's a bit of a malware/security risk, but to be honest as long as you keep your antivirus in order you should be fine. If you don't really use the new features etc of the latest versions just stick with what you have.

You don't need to store your documents and work files in the cloud with Office 365, the software is installed and runs like all previous versions. A constant internet connection is certainly not necessary. 365 is simply an subscription based licensing model. If you have other people in the house with their own laptops, tablets and phones it can make a lot of sense to have it all covered under the one subscription (for the "Home" package) and its not really that expensive (compared to say a sub for Xero or Adobe products).

I'm not an MS lover by any stretch, but Office 365 is OK.

:ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:. If they don't use that on the product packaging they are missing a hell of a ringing endorsement!!

I know what you mean though; subscription model is annoying in some respects but I think it is just their response to the changing shape of software. It'll obviously suit some a lot more than others too.
Did you like that then :p

Trouble is office really is unmatched, over the years I’ve tried LibreOffice, the Apple equivalents, but always go back to actual Office when I want something done. Maybe it’s force of habit over 25 odd years of using it, but all the alternatives in my experience are somehow compromised.

I still run Win Xp with office 2003 on my main computer and it goes fine. Not as quick to fire up nowadays perhaps as I haven't cleaned it up for a bit. But no viruses or malware that I know of on it. It does have good antivirus software and firewalls etc.
I used to always have new pc with latest Windows etc, but I think I'm getting old and the hassle of moving everthing to a new one and getting it to my liking just puts me right off.

Mrs has a laptop on Win 10 with office 365 on it, parents office pc is the same using the same 5 user subscription.
No issues with having stuff online or needing internet to work. You can save stuff online/cloud with One drive which is included.
I think the sub based system is going to be more and more, I was looking for software for another job and it used to be a fortune but now its monthly sub, which makes it possible rather than handing over £8k in one hit!

I run W7 on a mini PC and use Open Office quite happily. I do get the odd winge from sprogs when home from Uni or work and wanting Office, but they can manage now I have shown them how to save work as docx files! I actually still have licensed legal copy of O7 too, but never bothered installing it... As for 365, now that does set my daughter spitting...

I am, I have to admit, well in truly in bed with the lady of Babylon, Google. So I also use Google Doc at times, purely for the ease of working and accessing files online with my Chromebook/tablet/phone.... or PC! Wonderful too, when my son was wrapping up his dissertation and we were reading through and editing the document remotely. :)

Sticking with what I've got for now , and which does all I need and more . I'll see which way the wind blows if I hit a serious snag. But again, thanks to all for your opinions , views and input.
