Concreting passageways

would appreciate advice on passageways for new shed. Am I right I’m thinking limestone is better than Sand and gravel as wears more even so less harsh on cows feet? Also has anyone rolled with hexagonal grooving and opinions on this? We are planning on leaving a ‘grippy’ I say that as oppose to rough as we tamp ie for grip with possibility of grooving over the next couple of years. C40 with fibres mix across 16ft all advice greatly received as its coming from 10.30 in the morning! Tia

We borrowed an aluminium thing on poles just puts grooves in the concrete, have to be quick doing it tho wetter the better! Would use it again if we have another shed.mate of mines a good trimmer reckons the hexagons are rubbish and rubbish on the feet

Where did you hire/get your roller from @pappuller ? As in the 1 that leaves hexagonal like honeycomb? Is it super easy to do?

Our first builder bought a hexagonal roller at our behest. Not cheap IIRC but it makes a nice pattern that is easy to clean and appears grippy enough to give cows confidence walking on it. Hasn't worn either after 5 years but the trick is to get the concrete just at the right stage of going off to make the indents

The guy that does our concrete says that fibres only stop surface cracking and add no strength. Isn’t C40 a it over kill for cow passages we do C25 here and have no bother

Thanks for all replies will crack on how we thought leave it grippy, bed on Sand anyway so will be no bother. Gone c40 make it nice and strong as I’m hoping it lasts a long time! Cheers

C40 is better at 6 inches with fibres. Waste of money Over 6 inches. God pulled concrete up the other day my dad laid 25 years ago and in places it was 3 inches deep with no cracks nothing. Use groover on poles here plenty of grip with sand too.

Really nice set you have there @Bald Rick , what's to the right of the wall on the right? Never seen a feed passage go horizontal to the cubicles, makes sense there looks to be tons of room.passages are as much wide as they are beautiful. Nice Yorkshire boarding!!!

when laying concrete if possible put down a layer of reinforced mesh, with spacers to keep it off the ground, have it at least 3 inches of the ground,if you can't ,specify structural fibres not anticracking ones will do a good job
Also if you can, hire a air or mechanical porker, this drives out air pockets making the concrete stronger again
If you want it wetter on arrival ask the readymix company to send extra plasticiser, better to add this than water ,as water will weaken the concrete and pasticiser will make it more workable without losing strength

It's our far off dry cow area with a handling race on the right and calving pens on the left.
This is the same area after 5 years:

We did our yard the last couple of months and did the part for cows with the hex roller. Awfa grippy and a nice finish. Was clean until yesterday as we had slurry tankers in all day
