I think one thing that has abit to do with sale of certain years of defenders is the change of taxation value, iam not just sure myself which year this came in(n) ie, if it was late TD5 or early 07plate puma's(Ford's). I think it went from 200 & something pound ...Up to £400+ . Am sure someone on here will know the exact amounts

That is only for station wagon ( car) versions.
Commercial vehicles of all makes don't have the road tax escalation.

You must have had a bad experience @suffolksmallholder with your comments against the five potters. Mine's just coming up to 16 years old with over 200K on the clock, only the service parts on the engine, same clutch and yes it does its fair share of towing. The only rust I need to sort for its upcoming MoT is the ends of the rear cross member, they actually used a slightly thinner steel than the chassis which is perfectly sound with not a lot of care from me either!
I bought in 2003, for work, my only ever new vehicle. A 110 hi-cap. I took straight it to a body specialist who made it into a tray/tipper with an aluminium body. Perfect machine, or so I thought. There was a flat spot when driving the engine which could not be cured by the local LR dealer. Eventually I gave up & when the warranty expired I sent the brain off for a re-map. Not a fire breathing, black smoking monster, just a drivable machine. The tiny increase in power @30,000 miles was too much for the dmf clutch so I had a solid one fitted, perfect! This was fine & dandy & I had a lovely machine. BUT why should I have had to do this? At MY cost too. Why couldn't LR make a machine that did everything it should straight from the box, not be a pile of carp for three years:confused::banghead::banghead::banghead:?

Re the purchase. Am I the only person who has slept in a Land-Rover main dealership up in the roof tent of a display 110 camper? I slept for four hours until the salesman wondered if I'd gone home:eek: & asked the reception ladies where had his customer gone.

I see where you're coming from and there is no excuse from a main dealer for sorting out a problem that a good independant garage can do. Whilst a Defender is good out of the box say to speak they're not the be all and end all of work vehicles and dealer back-up has in the main been woefully inadequate.
Mine's a 2002 110 Station Wagon and I'm the second owner, the first being Thames Valley Police who had it for 7 years then shoved it into an auction where I bought it for a low price as it looked unloved in the corner of the yard. I've just put the second 100k miles on it since I bought it with fairly little expense or trouble, at the start I did approach the Police workshops where it was allegedly serviced and looked after as there was an issue with the alarm, turned out to be a simple fix by myself with a bit of Googling and they told me that any book service was done by their local dealer. When I had mine mapped the tuning company found that there had been no updates since it had left the factory, there were fault codes that suggested that it had never seen any diagnostic check since new.
I have since become a bit of an "expert" on the Td5 after buying a second hand Nanocom, one of the few diagnostic boxes that will work with the peculiarities of the Land Rover ECM's. I've grown rather attached to it now, it's the vehicle I have kept the longest and I honestly don't see me changing it for anything else, I can't think of anything else that could take its place.
As for value, yes there are some truly ludicrous prices out there for some absolute nails, even now after 8 years mine is still worth £2K more at bottom book price than what I paid for it all those years ago. In your case I wouldn't be trying to tart it up, I'd be advertising it up for sale on Farcebook, let a couple of independant garages that work with Defenders know that you are looking for realistic offers, target the "anoraks" as they'll fall hand over fist to buy an "unmolested" object of their desire!
