Mass starvation is humanity’s fate if we keep flogging the land to death | George Monbiot

Written by George Monbiot

The Earth cannot accommodate our need and greed for food. We must change our diet before it’s too late
Brexit; the crushing of democracy by billionaires; the next financial crash; a rogue US president: none of them keeps me awake at night. This is not because I don’t care – I care very much. It’s only because I have a bigger question on my mind. Where is all the food going to come from?

By the middle of this century there will be two or three billion more people on Earth. Any one of the issues I am about to list could help precipitate mass starvation. And this is before you consider how they might interact.

Since you’re here …

… we have a small favour to ask. More people are reading the Guardian than ever but advertising revenues across the media are falling fast. And unlike many news organisations, we haven’t put up a paywall – we want to keep our journalism as open as we can. So you can see why we need to ask for your help. The Guardian’s independent, investigative journalism takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce. But we do it because we believe our perspective matters – because it might well be your perspective, too.

If everyone who reads our reporting, who likes it, helps fund it, our future would be much more secure. Support the Guardian – it only takes a minute. Thank you.

Just read his piece on the end of livestock farming, and I wonder where he gets his ‘facts’ from. Where does he think the soya comes from to provide all that protein?
He’s a nutter IMO but if there any chance of his brave new world happening I’m glad I won’t be here to see it

trouble is, he is a highly educated idiot, with common sense drumded out of him, and yet he has his face in the public view, and he is not alone, far from it, as idiots seem to draw more idiots onto the fold, thus getting bigger groups, and the idiots of the general public, are drawn on idiotisym, and has a snow ball effect, getting bigger all the time,
now he is not stupid, as stupid people don't know what they are talking about, he knows what he is talking about so that makes him an idiot, but if stupid people listen to him and believe him, then their no longer stupid, as they become idiots,
the sad thing with idiots is, not many good people will stand up to them, as idiots are very hard to deal with,

I don't know how many acres of abandoned fields I saw during my visit to Russia but it was a lot.
Funny thing was, I was in a party of 60 odd, and no one else commented on what we were seeing out of the coach window.
