Advice on advice

If you've got a business idea, you'd usually want to speak to people/firms already doing it to get their advice on the systems/processes involved, unforeseen pitfalls, margins etc etc. Often though that means speaking to people who you might to some extent be going into competition against/ or in other cases some large firm who might not want to be bothered helping out some random farmer who wants to start a micro-whatever.

I'd be interested to hear how people have gone about this and what their experiences have been? Cheers

Those larger firms might want a smaller supplier involved so they can use that niche/micro/homegrown tag themselves as well.

ive always found its better to to talk with someone whos been there seen it done it , lets put it like this if you were going to set up an airline would you go to mr oleary or some guy who calls himself an aviation consultant and never risked his own cash or home, ive always had good advice from my elders and those who have achieved, never much use in the long term from a so called consultant, in fact if id followed some of their advice which I have wasted money paying for I wouldnt be farming or if I was it would be on a blackgrass ridden spot without my family taking the business forward from a better place than when I started

Can I suggest you speak to the CLA? We offer impartial, expert and unlimited advice to our members, which has proved invaluable to many. Whether it to simply talk through an initial idea, sources of funding, planning permission, 3rd party agreements, taxation and any other issue, we are a very good first port of call. Also with over 30,000 members and 10 million acres, we have most probably advised on it before! Let me know if you think we can help.

What do you think Mr. O'Leary is going to do when he wants to wind down and move into semi-retirement? I suspect that he will become a "consultant". There are good and bad consultants and advisors (like in every other job) and like everything else it is up to the purchaser to ensure that they pay for a good one (or in the case of Mr O'Leary an expensive one).
