How much is the metcalfe point? How about using the simba tines but at 6 per metre or however many you want?
I think the metcalf points are £85,so are expensive compared to replacing sim tech.would the tines of a Duncan drill fit and how much?I like the idea of the t point for the seed to sit in

The old simba drawerbar hitch was knackered so we added this on Monday. Works a treat. Much better turning circle and actually feels like it is attached to the tractor.

i bought a 3m trailed freeflow and then replaced standard feet with Metcalfe feet . something off a half way house in direct drilling but drills are built like tanks so a good starting point in my view on my small area .drill pulled really easy on some rolling sandy loam soils [150 hp ]

glad to say i found some cheap labour and small enough to crawl underneath . points were a pain to fit as nothing lined up not sure if legs were genuine . had to buy some seed tube boots off Ed Weaving as seed pipes dont fit coulter tubes

picture shows ground after I R Grass that had been sprayed and subsoiled and then planted with mustard as a means to fight the ir grass .8 weeks in ground topped and planted with w wheat

and lastly a couple of photos showing a w wheat field direct drilled after straw had been removed with a 8 way cover crop mix . Conclusion feel drill needs straw removed or could act as a big old straw rake . Drill worked as you expect and the feet transformed it into a easy pulling cheap direct drill that could be a solution for a few of us .

hi yes drill still going and still doing a great job with its metcalfe feet
Do you have any more photos of it? And the crops it has drilled? I have a 6 meter and was looking to set it up with leg spacing at 250mm with 2.5imch Dutch openers but the Simba leg strength seems to be an issue. This looks like a great alternative though. I watched some sim tech videos after seeing your thread to see how the legs cope with dd and they look absolutely solid. Are you full DD now? Does trash ever cause issues? Guessing levelling boards taken out? I’m worried if I don’t band the crop at 250mm the inter row spacing would be too wide? Thanks

ill try find some more photos. Simba leg strength is not what it could be even on my easy working land sandstone works it way to the surface regally which is not always easy to see and snaps a leg no trouble. The latest 30ml sim tech leg is excellent, having had a sim tech out on demo a few years ago , don't go to fast with it and the legs will work fine on your drill. not quite totally dd yet ,I do use a straw rake after spring barley before going into i.rye grass for haylage.i also have front legs just kissing the ground / 25ml / on the drill when planting s/barley and i.rye grass; all other crops are dd. if I don't use the sumo front disc's on the tractor after a cover crop I do get blocked occasionally . spraying of early and allowing time for c/crop to die back dose the trick usually. Having seen wheat grown on 600ml rows at 80kgs with little effect on overall performance at mizuri open days I wouldn't worry about running at 250ml. Good luck.

Thanks for those. Were sim tech ok to deal with re getting legs off them?
sim tech could not have been more helpful over the demo I had with there drill but I use Metcalfe drill points on Simba legs which I think make a great job only trouble is the legs do snap on my sandstone . not sure if the boss at sim tech would want to sell you the legs with out the drill but if he dose happy days

Just bringing this thread back to life. @Captain Mainwaring is this drill still on the go??
Yes our simba freeflow with simtec tines is still running. Now down to 19 tines for 210mm spacing. Looking to add the front cutting discs this summer to help with drilling into thick straw as it doesn't cope well enough with that yet. The direct drilled crops yielded very well last year. Hoping to direct drill more area this autumn.

Do you have any more photos of any of the crops? Where is the trash collecting? Have you taken levelling boards out for dd? I find mine are a pia in min tilled trashy fields.

I’ve got one in Worcester if you want a look it’s a basic model yr 2000 I think, it’s got the nice shape hopper and converted to to variable rate Rds keep under cover 99% of the time and a split rear axle for nice headland turns also mine puts the weight across the full with of the packer wheels and had the better transport wheels fitted ready.
