SimTech Aitchison Drills

I would like to try some spring osr but not sure my fields are level enough yet to drill shallow as only on my second year of dd. What would be the deepest I could get away with?

That's one thing that often confuses me. We "know" that OSR benefits from precise seed placement and doesn't have much energy in supply. Still, with a subsoiler drill you get seed blown out to all kinds of depth and most still reach surface. I think it has more to do with soil penetration resistance, both above and below seed, and not getting too wet around the seedling. Perhaps spring OSR is more sensitive than winter varieties as you want an even stand right from the start.

Looking at the grass model at the moment as we are only 100 acres so don't need anything to large. How do they cope in heavy sticky clay? If the goings good I should be able to drill the whole farm in a few days so can hopefully get it in in the right weather. Currently we are very traditional with a plough, disk, power harrow, drill, harrow and roll system. Hoping to reduce some of the passes every year. I did think about getting a stubble rake or einbock to run over to close the slots after the sim tech if I get one.

@le bon paysan does all his drilling with one, but don't know his soil type.

It's more or less the same as a TSem 300, just lighter and without the roller on the back and with a smaller seed box (a PITA for 500kg bags?). The roller on the TSEM 300 doesn't do much, if any, slot closing, but the chain behind drags a bit of loose soil over them. If soil conditions are right, there will be a bit of loose soil crumbled over the seed in the slot, not closed up particularly. Roll after if you think you need to close the slot, or leave.

My biggest concern would be dealing with the inevitable wheeling from straw baling, carting and muck or slurry spreading.

Not seen any problems with it to be honest, obviously after a very wet year it might be a problem but after a couple of years the ground becomes firmer and its not an issue, 2012 type years can be a problem whatever system, try it and see you might be surprised:)

Thanks that helped a lot sadly only 2.4m
Had a 3018 on a dairy farm and it was a wee ripper, tbh.
(Don't forget that your effective width is a little wider than stated as you will keep off your last boot-mark by 6 inches, ie 2.7m + .15 )

I loved that wee drill though, all drills should have that rodent stopper to keep mice from running up the spouts!
The only thing I'd change would be put the drive wheel in towards the centre more as it is begging to be ripped off on the outside lap :) but we had very good results with it into unsprayed, pugged pastures.
They are wide for their width if you get my drift - a good foot out each side for the wheels and frame.

I will have one of my own before I'm done.

I would think lifting it with a small tractor would be the first problem it weighs 1750 kg (without seed !).
At least 100hp tractor is what you need.

^this. It's handling the weight, rather than actually pulling it.

However, the lighter Grassfarmer/TSemGrass model will take a lot less lifting and pulling, so could be a better option on a smaller tractor/farm?

Having a play with the new toy early this morning before the rain.

Really quite pleased how it is travelling through this old permanent pasture.
