The whole point of high prices is precisely to stop a resource running out. High prices are a signal, for consumers to conserve what they have, and find other solutions to their needs, and for producers to produce more, or in the case of hay and straw either bring supplies to market that they were otherwise going to keep for themselves, or to import some from somewhere with a surplus, as actual production is a longer term affair. This prevents us reaching a situation where there literally is no straw to be bought for love nor money.

Can anyone compare how much straw is being used in various parts of the country to last year?

Just because a certain dealer isn't as busy doesn't mean farmers are going elsewhere or even trading direct farm to farm.

Usage will be curtailed to a point but we all still need straw(its fertilizer as well)

75% down .farmers using alternatives in one case 10 year old hay
We may have to except that straw has just got to expensive to use as bedding in the West . power stations have show their hand and gone to the market with £90/ ton to spend . future for straw as a bedding product not looking good

You sure power stations aren’t buying this straw and billing those on contracts to supply them and who haven’t got enough?
I know at least one that’s ended up in the hands of solicitors - large contractor who has said he will never deal with the power station again

Yep I passed one on the 303 yesterday

I reckon we should have a TFF award for who spots the most straw lorry's heading down the A303/ M5 in say the next month:)

As for straw getting too expensive to use, seen forage shortages like this many a time before when prices for say straw/ silage etc get stupidly high, next thing you know the market crashes and take silage for example 4/5 years ago round bale silage was making £35/40 at auctions across the SW, cue next harvest a few weeks later yields of grass were very high and then the following autumn/ winter you couldn't give bales of silage away, same will happen with straw no doubt ( thou of course it wont be worthless )

Now only just over 100 days before combines will be moving into WB, most farmers have already got the fert on nice and early which is a very good sign(y)
