The longest wettest winter..

I have had rain to record for the last 18 days for a total of 367mm. Raining now and more forecast. We have had flooding of course, and soil erosion because of it.

Five acres of almonds began blooming on 1 March. They need bees to pollinate them - when the flowers are dry. They are self-fertilising so there has probably been some fertilisation within flowers. Fungal diseases will be having a good time due to being very mild - up to 18.6 on Tuesday. Ideal conditions for what is known as Jacket Rot that kills the young drupe. Half the area is waterlogged with some running water and the rain would make spraying a waste of time and money even if I could put it on by air.

The trees have not leafed out yet, so no fertiliser has been needed, but they should have 40% of the annual total of N before the end of April. Olives should have 50% by the same date, and soil temps were too low before the rain started. My forecast is a poor harvest even at this stage. Such is life.

Gale force bitterly cold easterly with occasional blizzard conditions. And at least another two days of it to come.

Its getting silly now. Feed the stock, go home, and sit by the fire. Not a chance of spraying or spreading. Ground too soft and wet when it isn't frozen, and too windy.

I am half way through inspecting cleaning and checking my beet drill units but stopped now with fine snow blowing into the shed and cant feel my feet.

Time to call it Saturday and go home.

Pretty much sick of it. Best think of something else.

Put some quadrants along the open side of the shed as bitter inside and out.

Hopefully will stop any snow blowing in tonight.

Just about keeping up building pens as they lamb, have kicked them out to feed rolls and empty a few pens to the other shed.

Fetched all the ewes and lambs in this morning after I picked up a dead single the morning which had died of exposure. Twins looked freezing.

Bitter wind out and a slight covering of snow. Forecasted a lot more this evening and overnight.

Luckily the ewes have stopped lambing for the last 18 hours- only had one lamb. No doubt they’re saving it for the really foul weather tonight!
