Docks!

Yup.
As simple as that. Contrary to the thoughts of some we just don't have a weed problem. (y) Our paddocks are covered in 100mm of fantastic grass mix, the perfect habitat for mice & voles, so the hunting ground for a pair of barn owls, much to the joy of our guests & us of course.:)

We run an equicentral system & the area where the ponies live, during their day, is the messiest but as this is a synthetic surface there is nowhere for the weeds to establish. Our paddocks are envied locally by all who see them, particularly now after the wet winter. My wife gives talks on how the system works. We do occasionally have a clover problem but we split the spraying into two seasons & have knocked it back for now. Last big application was nine years ago. Remember grazon is in the animals poo & shouldn't be carted off site. As we supply mushroom compost we have to be careful here.

Very interesting method if I understand the cocept correctly. We too have little problem with dock in two of the paddocksm but in the other two they are there, as the land has had neglect for many years and allowed the weeds to run free.

We first put in a paddock paradise but as we're in an East Anglian heavy clay area which really wasn't suitable so we moved sideways into the Equicentral system. It wasn't such a job as we'd done quite a lot of work to enable the animals outside & inside space. The outside was just extended using more geogrid and creating an outside covered area, bearing in mind possible resource guarding & other anti-social horse behavior. Some extra gates plus more post & rail fencing.
No churning up, freedom to wander but control over the grass to ensure it isn't being eaten when it is in a sugar producing cycle, with 100mm being a perfect length for low sugar production. I do mow with a flail to keep the correct length.

So may I ask if you subscribed to the video system to get the understanding of this system - or got into it some other route?

To take this thread on a bit of a tangent, I was talking to a guy yesterday who is convinced he has lost several ewes from poisoning by docks.... is this possible??? Never heard it myself (and he does have some "funny" theories at times) but have very few docks around personally, always spot with Grazon or Pastor.
