Low fibre diet anyone?

Anyone tried it or on it there is something def triggering my symptoms. The more I read and what I can easily digest I am suspicious . Had issues on and off for nearly 30yrs. The drs used to say got to increase fibre but there are many issues I have that fibre makes things worse for me.

def not lactose or wheat. I feel better when not eating all this wholemeal, dried fruits, nuts etc. I'm going to cut down and see if there is a difference with IBS

My OH is the same and always been told by the many consultants etc etc that she should up her fibre intake....linseeds, brown bread, cardboard (my joke) etc. But greasy foods such as chips, white bread and that sort of thing actually relieve her symptoms, doesn’t help shes carrying some extra weight so they peer down their noses a little.

Anyhow years later we discover she might have a mild problem with endometriosis which antagonises her lower intestines somehow. Went on progesterone (I think) non stop and not had a problem since. So don’t rule out hormones etc.

If you're suffering from bowel or bladder issues that have cyclical symptoms then please look into endometriosis. Terrible disease with no cure, only treatments are artificial hormones and surgery. I myself am recovering from surgery at present - narrowly avoided a stoma. High fibre diets don't help me at all, I am starting to follow a low fibre diet.

Its strange isn't it I do feel better and the bowel is better on lower fibre foods. I started having IBS issues around 19. Some nasty undercarriage damage. Been on and off for years. Also fatigue and fibro issues started 7 yrs later. I think connected. Dr always saying increase wholegrain but breakfast cereals (excl porridge) kills me then the nausea starts.

Not hormones as been checked. Not endo either. I also think there is issue with silent reflux - sore throats, ears, catarrh, blocked up, nausea (I think stomach acid effects mood)

I have been reading up for weeks on supplements and strange who my mood has lifted since Im taking things for reflux.

It's so frustrating not being able to function in basic ways such as digesting and pooing!

I used to suffer from nausea daily, to the point people thought it was morning sickness. It is definitely endo related, and pain killers damage to my stomach lining. The endo has caused no end of bladder and bowel problems.

If I had the money and time I would grow my own fruit and veg, make food from stratch all the time, and use non toxic household cleaning, make up etc.

Did these problems exist 50 years ago?

What sort of fibre are you eating? For IBS I avoid harsh fibres like wholemeal bread (for example), and only have brown bread (which is hard to find so I make my own). Equally, no wholemeal rice, only white rice. Oats are a soft fibre, wholegrains are harsh.
(might be soluble vs insoluble, can't remember the terminology :))
Have you tried something like Kefir? Might help with both IBS and reflux. Cut out sugars & artificial sweeteners, and eat more veg - you need to feed your gut bacteria.

I do find that avoiding lentils, beans, heavy wholegrains etc stops the bulking up. There seems to be the wrong message from the drs to increase fibre but that can cause slow transit and bulking up in the guts making it difficult to go to the loo. I make my own yogurt so don't bother with the other stuff. We eat a lot of veg.

It's tricky isn't it. Different things affect different people differently, regardless of what the doctors say. Keep a food diary, and log any problems in there, that's the only real way to identify problem food groups. Also you could try having a week without gluten, and a week without dairy etc etc, try ruling things out and see how you get on.

Have you had the colonoscopy yet?
Had my first in Nov 2017, and consultant said very conclusive from activity and infections within the colon/large intestine - I'm now IBD/Crohns. Keeping the food diary can be very revealing!
Anyone wanting a good read about the gut/poo/digestion/bacteria etc - highly recommend Gut: The Inside Story of Our Body's Most Underrated Organ by Giulia Enders
