Odd question perhaps but what do those that have used one think they would do to grassland

We have used one on grass in late summer on some heavy baked land. 4 legs made 200 hp struggle and nearly pulled the lugs off the tyres. It was very hard and dry. The grass burnt off due to its roots being cut.

They do a good job of alleviating compaction but you need to pick the right time to go as with any subsoiler. Too dry and it needs massive draft and starves the crop of moisture. Too wet and it will smear. Needs to be just right and they work a treat. I would recommend them, but I'd buy an Erth subsoiler if I could afford one.

Be aware there are different frame sizes and configurations. A 4 + 0 furrow frame pulls a lot squarer behind a big tractor with wider wheel track setting than a 3 + 1. This is due to the position of the headstock which enables the RH furrow to lift out the tractor RH wheeling where you have a reasonably wide track setting such as 72".

I would say that 3 or less furrow frames would need a track setting of less than 72". The headstock cannot be moved across, however on some models extra legs can be added at the front.

Check carefully before you buy.

@hendrebc I haven't found any need for discs in an arable situation. They are need in grassland.

Check the frogs for wear as people tend to run the points down and wear the frogs. The underside of the legs is the place to look for leg wear, again caused by failure to change the shins early enough.

The shatter boards are often missing but I have found a fair degree of lift even with them set flat so could maybe do an adequate job without them.

Most parts available from pan anglia last time I looked. Note there are frogs having bolt on points and others having knock on points secured with a roll pin. Be sure to check availability of knock on or bolt on spares. I am not sure bolt on points are still available.
