Im toying withe the idea of buying on old spsprayer. We dont do a huge amount. But i like the idea on jump to and go. No hooking up. Also our trailed seems to make more of a mess reversing into corners than what its worth. So the budget is 10 k. Seen a nice case and bateman. 9k hours and 11k hours. So are they a ticking time bomb with hydraulic motores and pumps. And will they be crap on hills. All advice pleáse

+1 for Clayton we started with a Clayton/knight after tractor with front and rear tanks

It had done a lot of hours when we got it only problem we ever had was someone had put the wrong brake fluid in

We're now on an agribuggy

I think a hydrostatic will be nicer to drive but probably gonna be more expensive to run at some point

Going self propelled you'll make a lot less mess our neighbour runs a trailed and they run down a hellova lot more than we do yes things can feel a little iffy when sitting on row crops I've been fairly concerned spraying grass at times it it's amazing where either machine will go

I run an rb15, one thin to remember though is your basically running a tractor and a sprayer so they’re always going to cost more to run than a trailed or mounted sprayer alone don’t forget it’s another insurance policy to.
I put over 2.5k in pins bushes and trac rod ends on mine this year, Would I go back to a mounted sprayer though? Definitely not(y).

It takes a little getting use to driving but one you get the feel for it you can’t half cover some ground in a day and it’s a pleasure to drive.

We bought a HiLo in about 2005. We are still using it on 200 acres. We had a wheel motor fail about a year after we bought it but no problems with them since. Keep the oil clean and change the filters regularly.

Without suspension it can be a rough ride but wouldn't go back to a tractor mounted or trailed unless I really had to. You do need to keep inspecting and looking out for leaky hoses at that age so nip problems in the bud rather than end up stranded miles away with a bust hose.

We used to have a Chaviot which was also OK. Nice to drive with front suspension.

We were in the the exact same position last year. We knew we had to upgrade but were seriously toying with buying a S/H small 4wd tractor and fitting it out with front tank and mounted 20m sprayer. In the end costs and compromises made us reconsider an SP and we bought a HiLo.

It was an absolute wreck, but it was the right machine at a too-good-to-be-true price. We have spent a good bit of time and money on it and it has been worth every penny. We're never going back to a mounted. We have also used it for spreading with a de-mount kit. The machine has not saved us hours - it has saved us weeks and the advantages in timelyness of applications are really showing in our crops.

My advice is go for it, but keep your eyes wide open. Good S/H SP machines are £18k+. Anything sub £10k with hydro will have been well used and WILL have future costs. Be prepared for this.

I'd be very cautious on a £10k SP, nearly got caught on one, looked ok until I got it on farm, once around the field and 4 wheel motors showed leaks, and several other problems appeared, had a quote and would have took £25k to get it sorted to pass the MOT. Ended up spending £23k on a 10 year old Chafer and has run for 2 years like a dream :)

What about the repairs on a Clayton/multidrive now that kellands have sold out?

I’d agree having needed parts recently that took far too long to get here but gather the storeman left and they moved everything in with McConnell. But then what is specific that can’t be got elsewhere?

I was looking for an old Agribuggy 18 months ago, for the same ‘jump on & go’ reasons as the OP. I ended up spending £12k on one of the latest Stealths made, a tidy enough machine with only 4500 hours on it. I’m not doing enough acres to ‘justify’ a sp sprayer, but I only run one tractor, don’t want to pee about with a set of row crops, or changing them on my own, and figured that it was a another machine whose depreciation was mostly done.
As above, I was after an Agribuggy as it’s a Land Rover engine & gearbox and mechanical axles, so should be cheaper/easier to keep going.

I haven’t regretted it for an instant.:)
