ive got a 300tdi and a D4 but have seen a td5 local that I’m interested in to replace the 300tdi in the future....apart from the chassis is there anything else that I should know about...cheers

chassis is the main thing everything else is fairly straight forward to fix if its running driving and has no lights on and is the right price buy it

oh and check the cill's and door shuts for rust common places they go I take it you want it for the road and not just on the farm

Mainly the road, towing ect. I will keep the 300tdi for off road
its the rear section of the chassis where the tank is thats prone to rust can be repaired but you have to take the tank off which is a pain just finished doing one now

Check there is no oil in the injector wiring loom, take the clip off at the ECU and check. It was an early problem that is easily solved, but can bugger up the ECU.

It was a stupid decision to use plastic locating dowels between the head and block, the head got hot, plastic would melt head would move then would bugger the head gasket.
Most of the horror stories you hear about the td5 have been sorted by now.
Chassis corrosion at the rear by the fuel tank, new 1/4 chassis easily available to sort that problem, if its a 7 seater, check the airbags on the rear suspension, the rubber perishes with age. Easily and cheaply changed, but if left left the compressor gets cooked due to constantly working.
Check the 3 amigos (warning lights on the dash) go out. Needs a land rover compatible diagnostic kit to reset.
Parts are cheap, new injector loom for the oil to the ECU problem can be had for twenty quid.
Other than that same as any other car/pickup.

Does it have a centre diff. lock as all proper Land Rovers should have ?

They have a centre diff, but not allways connected for diff-lock, depending on spec, easy enough to retro fit linkage.

Only the early ones, but no lever fitted, but quite easy to fit a lever and linkage out of a discovery 1.
@Northeastfarmer sunroofs have a habit of leaking, not uncommon to find them sealed up with silicon. Easier than removing the headlining and fixing the drain channels.

No sunroofs to worry about leaking...it’s got climate control...
Maintained by an absolute enthusiast...only sold it cos he has had a knee operation and has bought an auto Range Rover
Chassis very good, brake pipes replaced with braided ones, brand new battery, brand new k+n filter...the veichle has wanted for nothing...5 brand new tyres and wheels just been power coated....I don’t like the wheels though...so will look for a different pair on eBay when I’ve saved up
