Either you've not been in remote areas or perhaps you're a bit thick?! (No offence)
When there is as many '000 s of acres as there is that agriculturally speaking is , to use a technical term - fekkin useless, but is farmed today, even with a low stocking rate of 1 ewe; 5 acres or so, it doesn't take much to go back to a great depression situation where everyone would -rightly- leave the land derelict.
Government pumps in £ X, to lift the economics to subsistence level, keeps unemployment statistics down, nature conservation booms, the upland community is maintained and x 000 tons of carbon is stored in the peat.
Yes it's bollox, but what happens in government that isn't?:scratchhead:

Do you think the UK government will continue these subsidies post Brexit?

Pillar 2?
Yes, maybe more targetted to farms in particular areas, or with specific wildlife merit rather than CSS / ELS on proper agricultural land as it is now.
Maybe not to the same level (overall budget) but to the same level (rate per area).

if you voted out you don't have a leg to stand on when it comes to wanting subsidies I'm afraid.
Subsidies will be phased out from 2020 onwards. I wasn't arguing the case but the radio interview was a joke. Presumably that is the best the NFU have to offer... And there was no justification for having received payments for decades gone by let alone receiving them in future.
Farmers have such bad PR. I have worked in 2 other industries and found the public to be a lot more out of touch with agriculture than most farmers think that they are.
Prime time radio interviews like this are golden opportunities to engage with the public, all that was achieved was alienating the public further.
