Hybrid company cars

Hi,
Still undecided as to what to drive next. Current shogun is a commercial doing 23mpg. Cheap tax but I detest it. Looking at a VW V6 amorak which is nice but it’s still a pick up. (Been in discoveries for 6 years)
So am looking at hybrid XC60/Mitsubishi PHEV/BMW etc.....
has anyone got a hybrid? I’m happy enough that I’ll be using the petrol engine for 60% if time but it will still do 35mpg according to website. Any genuine owners that can give figures. Most journeys are from office to hotel so sub 30 miles but a big part is long distance

Know a few people with Misti phev great on tax not great car is the feedback I get.... most wouldn’t have another... new Volvo looks interesting make sure the spec meets the new rules.... can you opt out and take a personal lease? If you know your mileage it could work out better. Depemds if you need a 4wd or a big car most hybrids are crap for towing which might be a consideration....

I went through this and decided to opt out and get a D4 Volvo XC60 but I don’t do a lot of miles (hopefully)

I’ve gone from a Disco Commercial to an Amarok V6, very happy with it ,
comfortable and plenty of go!

However it has the most inaccurate and useless satnav I’ve ever had, had me going all over the place when I was trusting it, wasted no end of time.

We bought an XC90 T8 Hybrid plug-in monstrosity in March as the "family bus".

I don't usually drive it as a matter of principle, but the other half is very pleased with it and far prefers it to the Disco it replaced, and I've noticed she tends to use it in preference to her own car too.

Fuel consumption varies a lot, and while I struggle to get it above 20 mpg (heavy foot) the other half gets 40 to 50-ish on mixed shopping runs and carting teenage football teams to and from games. We haven't had it on a proper motorway jaunt yet to see what the fuel economy can be stretched to. It'll do around 20-ish miles on the batteries before it needs to fire up the engine.

It's very well put together, looks stunning in R Design trim and the choice of 7 seats or mahoosive boot makes it very flexible and ideal as the family run around.

Can't comment on reliability as it's only done a couple of thousand miles so far.

The Bowers and Wilkins sound system is one of the options that MUST be ticked, it's phenomenal.

My only complaint really is the price. By the time I got busy with the options list it was dangerously close to Range Rover money (though the Audi Q7 we also considered was no different), and I expect the depreciation will be steep (though again, the Disco lost £20k in the 12 months we owned it, so I expect they are all much of a muchness in that respect).

Isn’t amrok “ dual purpose vehicle “ rather than a van? It’s a mine field of legislation and conflicting rules

It's the 2040kg bit that matters. A lot of new pickups are over that now especially the top spec versions.

I've been interested in the Mitsi Phev but spoken to people who say it's a great car but you need to know where all the filling stations en route are.

If you don't regularly charge a plug in hybrid you are simply lugging around batteries and burning excessive fuel, will need a charging point put in etc.

The Mitsi is good on tax and an OK car but it has looks that only a mother could love!

Our Volvo came with a normal 3-pin plug cable in addition to the standard 'charging point' cable. We've never actually used a charging point as there isn't a convenient one anywhere we take it, so it gets charged up from the wall sockets in the garage.

I believe the XC60 T8 I’m looking at can charge from 13amp socket in 8 hours (over night) or 2.5 from correct charging point ( office wall) it’s looking very good
Failing that I’ll put my diesel genny in the boot!

Fudge that must be slow or the battery in them teeny tiny?

Plugging it in at around 8pm of an evening will see it fully charged by the time I venture into the garage at 5am. No idea exactly how long it takes though.

It can charge from the petrol engine as you go along however, as well as capturing the braking energy and sending it to the battery pack.

Fairy nuff. It is a very small pack then, but I guess its primarily for company car tax advantages and emissions more than anything else.

Yes, it is a hybrid after all and the battery pack is only intended to be used for very short journeys. Perfect for a short commute, but on longer journeys it's basically a petrol car. It does have the benefit of bringing the emissions down to something obscene like 50 g/km which is a big boost to company car drivers.

Personally I prefer to use it to boost the performance, as it goes like a scalded cat when you combine the battery pack and engine in the 'Power' mode, it'll beat plenty of sports cars off the line if you give it plenty of right foot.

XC60 does 35 which will be fine for me during week if I’m staying at office. Petrol does 32mpg on its own. My shogun does 23 so it’s a win win
