It must rain soon......surely?

I DD’ed some Massif turnips in this evening, just in case. I’ve decided it’s too late for the swedes that were going in there, so onto plan B:

Turnips DD’ed before the ‘deluge that didn’t happen’ ten days ago, still have a way to go.....

And how’s yours doing @hendrebc ?
Looking really well and has done from the start. But wont be much use for anythung other than dry cow feed it :( with all this sun and hot weather weve been having its gone way past the cheesy head stage and is starting to turn its head down and the grain is quite hard. Wont be able to cut it till the 18th because its in glastir as unsprayed cereals. Usually it jist comes ready for wholecrop npw havi g been drilled im mid may.
Have made enquiries about a combine but i wont be able to get one i dont think or not until near the end of september anyway so it will be cut and baled same as always and ill just have to accept its only fit for the cows and most of the head will go through them. That field will be going to some sort of short term grass ley so i dont really want to be hanging around till october to be doing it either. Will get some pictures when i get at it at the weekend.

Sure I saw something about derogation to allow early cutting on glastir because of the weather

^this. A message dated July 15th saying that unsprayed Spring cereals can be harvested from July 15th this year. No need to contact them, just put the harvesting date in your Glastir diary. It won't effect your Glastir payment either.

Dad said he had a look but only saw about late sowing of root crops because of the dry. I probably should have checked myself :cautious: i cant wait till this bloody glastir agreement ends only one more year and i can stop this bullpoo scheme

It was in paragraph 2 of that message, just below the derogation for late establishment of root crop options.

That bullpoo scheme pays you how much to grow a crop that you can feed as wholecrop?

I knew i should have read the damn thing myself ffs
I know it pays me to do the wholecrop but i dont want it as a wholecrop. We used to grow it for combining but its become impossible to get hold of a combine and my grain bin has rotted through so i have nowere to store it either so make it as wholecrop which i dont want. It gets ruined by rats and is a pretty poor feed too the last lot i sent for analysis came back worse than some average looking hay i sent off at the same time. It would be better if the cutting date wasnt so late its always too far gone by the time we are allowed near it but this year its much too dry. But wed never grown wholecrop before so we sidnt know all these pitfalls with it when we decided to do it. Had we known about not being able to get a combine we wouldnt have put it on the agreement at all. I tried getting the contract changed to plant more roots instead seeing as i dont want the wholecrop but they wouldnt let me. Others have told me they have changed things on theirs though :scratchhead:
I might go back into it for other things but no way am i ever growing wholecrop on that scheme again. Probably wont grow any cereals again either. The whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth about enviroment schemes tbh (n)

pictures of my DD spring barley as promised. Looked really good a month ago but it's burnt off in places because of the dry weather and only yeilded 4-5bales an acre when I'd usually get 10 or more. It turned yellow much quicker than normal too it's usually still green this time of year this wasn't that far off combining really. The green underneath is mostly dandelions and sorrels that's grown since the rain we've been having it was all clean a month ago.
If anyone remembers the pasture crop trial I did when I drilled a few acres of leftover barley seed into a field of tired old grass it sort of worked. The barely was only 6inches at best and there was a lot of places were it failed completely but the grass was only ankle height too so there's something really wrong there. That block has been soil tested and had stuff put on to correct some things but for some reason or other that little field has been missed so there's no real wonder that it failed. Will get it looked at and try again with something else next year I haven't given up on the idea yet.

It's been a tough year to try new things, I'm not going to read too much into results from this year.
