Tef 20 grey fergie won't start

Hi I recently bought a tef 20, it started okay the first few times and shifted into all the gears okay, but for the last week it won't even turn over, I noticed about a week ago that the gear stick wouldn't find gears 1 and 2 all of a sudden (feels slack and won't click into them gears) gears 3 and 4 and reverse and start all appear okay. It was at this point the tractor hasn't started since, not sure if it is connected ? The correct start up sequence is use and the battery is brand new and fully charged, even tried different batteries but when you put in start nothing happens not even the sound of the engine trying to turn over, I've checked connections to the battery and everything is how it was when it was working. In at a loss as to what could be wrong, any help would be greatly appreciated ? also if anyone know of anybody in the north east that could look at the tractor who knows about grey fergies that would be great, many thanks in advance .

Hi.
If diesel is it running through all pipes ,filters, off tank etc all ok and NO air in system.
If one with gravity and no lift pump they need good clear no air fuel flow.
Gear stick slack,?
As it jumped the selector.
Our's does now and then ?
Undo 2 bolts by gear stick and lift off slowly dont drop anything in when off?
Is gear stick out or worn or selectors worn etc?
They do play up a bit .

Hi yes it is a diesel, fuel all okay, filters okay etc the gear stick can be moved into gear 1 and 2 position but it's just slack like in neutral, all other gears work correctly, so not sure what's happened, in regard to not starting uo I'm starting to think the starter motor must be broken ? As it does even engage?

Take it out/off check inertia on starter and teeth on flywheel maybe ?
Solenoid maybe had it also.
Check all electrical connections too.

Have you tried starting across the terminals on the starter motor? It sounds like a gearbox/selector issue to me & a gear could be partially engaged so ensue that the clutch is fully depressed before doing so.

You are pressing the brass button in that's next to your right leg?

My TEF won't start if the gearlever is too far to the right, you need to feel for the start position.

Where in the north east are you?
I could possibly come and have a look.

My thoughts was safty button

Id pop g lever off as said two nuts
Have a look , selectors should be in line for neutral .
U wouldn't want to be cranking off the seat if 1 or 2 is stuck in gear :oops:

Mine does this most times, I have a button on the solenoid that I press and then the starter motor teeth then engage on the flywheel, I suspect I need to adjust up the starting rod (the one that comes out of the box and goes towards the small button that activates the solenoid) but I havent bothered doing it yet (and prob wont!)
The selectors do wear, you can bodge your way around this by adding some decent weld to the bottom of the gearlever then grind to shape, I used TIG and stainless wire but guess mig would be fine.
You can of course convert it to a pre engaged starter (as found on the Perkins engined MF35) and have a key or a button to start and do away with the original set up, depends if you want to stay original or not.
I dare say that if you could get a 12v feed to the solenoid to see if the starter engages, you'd then be able to pin point the problem down, linkage or starter/solenoid but do make sure the thing is not in gear or the wheels are off the ground. Once you've done that you will prob find it will start off the stick but the problem will re-occur some other time.

Yes thanks, I know how to fix it but I quite like it as it is plus it stops anyone else jumping on and using it!!!

Hi Sorry for late reply, being busy on the tractor most nights, I've managed to get her going, one of the little metal bits that you can see when you take off the gearstick was not level with the the one at the other side so i used a metal bar and pried it back into position and i could access the gears better and the start gear position started working, gears 1 and 2 are now selectable but still dont click in as good as i would like, and sometimes when driving they slip out. Thanks all for all the advise and infomation.

Ours is worn a bit but selectors all lined up.
The level moves into start and if engine running push slowly can hear meshing so that part is ok.
Newish solenoid so next issue must be the button switch so not sure how that then energize solenoide(2 wires come off alternator,) to spin dog to start.
Ordered new one seen if thats problem.
