What's a "Backstop"?

Never mind a backstop.

What is this nonsense that the EU wants a 'backstop to the backstop'.

It's becoming very clear the EU does not want a deal other than one that keeps the UK within the control of the EU!!

I think the backstop is the deal that comes into force if no deal can be signed.

The backstop to the backstop is the deal if the backstop cannot be agreed.

So the backstop will be the whole of the UK staying in the EU.
The backstop to the backstop is where the EU take NI out of the UK without firing a gun.

From the BBC's A to Z of Brexit

B: Backstop

The insurance policy to guarantee goods can continue to move freely across the Irish border after Brexit, if no other solution can be found.

It's the main area of contention in the talks - both the UK and EU are committed to one, but they're at odds over how it should look.

The EU's backstop would see NI remain in the single market and the customs union until the UK comes up with a different idea, but Theresa May's backstop would see the whole UK stay in the customs union for a limited time after the transition period.

If there's no backstop breakthrough, there's no withdrawal agreement or transition period either.

The 'logical' step following the above is 'a backstop to the backstop's backstop' etc. etc. etc. :banghead:

It looks like the EU / EC want to wear us down and gain time for the whiners over here to create 'momentum' for another vote. But I think they have overplayed their hand in this; those who want another vote already want it, everyone else is just getting p*ssed off with the procrastination. To take the cover off I crack the 20 rusty bolts first and if necessary go back to the seized one and sort that because the cover ain't coming off if this one can't move.
NI problem is like the seized bolt, all the rest is time and effort just wasted.
The job can't be done until a way is found to loosen that bolt.
Guess that makes me a pessimist, an optimist would just assume all the bolts will loosen.

Must be a damn good quality bolt. Proper Sheffield steel. None of that German muck :cautious:
