Greetings,
Can anyone advise on any Gearbox match-up problems I would encounter if I try to swap out the original Perkins AD-3 152 Diesel "Rope Seal Engine" for a AD-3 152 Diesel "Lip Seal Engine" on my 1967 MF135UK Tractor ????
Any sound experienced advise would be appreciated...............

as long as you have the correct back plate fitted to the new engine then no problem

Thanks for the prompt response. If I get this right, additionally, I might have to source another back-plate that is compatible with the "Lipseal" AD3 152 Engine and my existing gearbox, suggesting that the "Rope seal" back plate would not work...........

Apart from throwing excessive oil through rear 'Rope-seal' contaminating clutch lining etc, its working fine. And that is despite replacing rope seal and seal-housing. Suspect crankshaft issues (acquired cut to 0.30" undersize). Plan to replace crankshaft / rebulid etc. and keep complete engine as spare. Getting a reconditioned Lip-seal version at a steal of a deal............

a rope seal back plate wont fit a lip seal engine as the lip seal has a bigger housing. how ever a lip seal plate will fit a rope seal. regarding your leak of oil through the rope seal i would replace the sump gaskets. they will have gone hard and most of the oil will be leaking through the rear cork one.

Considering the jolt of that unexpected back-plate hiccup, I think I will try that easy fix and if it works, I might be saving me a bundle.......................deal or no-deal. Thanks a zillion MF-ANDY, sound like you know your stuff.

we have a dexta tractor and it was leaking from the rear seal and I always used 15/40 oil but one day I went to top it up but the drum was empty and the only oil I had was Fuchs HD30 which I used in the sawbench and you may not believe it but no more leaks so now I only use that in the engine

Can't figure how and why that solution worked for your rope-seal engine but I guess, if all other "easy fixes" fails, I might be driven to consider something as basic as that. In the back of my mind, I think my crankshaft is the likely culprit..................
Thanks for your bit though.
