Female farmers needed!

I despise this trying to bend the reality to make it fit a perceived ideal, or agenda.

My missus and i are in complete equal business partnership.
By definition she is as much a farmer as i am.
We bring different things to the mix, and working alone with heavy plant and machinery isn't what she brings.
I don't suppose we're that different as a couple to others.

So why don't some people see the reality?
Genders are different, neither one better or worse, but -often- very different.

i have worked on farms with women working on them.
it did not take long for human nature to take its course,
and the pain it caused.

Thanks very much for all help and responses. We got in touch with various women in ag groups and got the needed female responses - from capable women who each reported to operating tractors, combines, quad bikes and other vehicles alone and added some really useful data to our study.

To answer the question on why we wanted to recruit more female participants - we wanted to be able to look at and compare male and female responses, this was based on past research indicating a difference in approach to risks and behaviours across genders. In order to make a meaningful comparison you need to do what’s called stratified sampling - basically it means you try to match the sample according to certain characteristics, such as gender, but equally could be something like job role, age group or whatever. We were also interested in recruiting more contractors as participants to compare owners with contractors, but had no luck there and have reached the end of our data collection period.

The data collected is really interesting, I will be back to the forum with a brief report once we have done some analysis - for anyone who is interested. Thanks again to all who helped out, my student has been thrilled with the response!

Well I’m a female farmer , although I prefer the term Land Manager.
In the summer I drive a JD 8530 , or 7530 , I do most of the ploughing and this year 96% of the powerharrow, and can weld better than anyone else on the farm

I also do all the worrying, the VAT, the finance , the tea, the dinners, the chivvying along of the grumpy blokes and the cash flows.

I reckon I’m not unique :)

And it’s thanks to women like you that we now have a wealth of female data from folks who operate machinery and gave us great insight into some of the similarities, and differences, in how women and men think about all the various risks and hazards - it’s a tough job no matter what your gender, and the opinion of women who do the job is just as important as the opinion of the men :)

do you factor in that the females responses must, by definition, be from atypical females?
(and i'm not saying they're better or worse, merely that they are unusual)

Atypical......as in not a 'normal' female! What is normal? I'm not normal for driving machinery and running my own farm? Unusual yes but not atypical.

I don'y know why it should even be unusual. Mrs Muck does her fair share of drilling, harrowing, bale carting etc and tends to do all the collection and dropping off of equipment and materials from the dealers, although this does get some raised eyebrows from the French farmers. Had a young lass driving a massive tri-axle bulker here a few weeks ago (although she did seem to struggle a bit with the rear axle steering) as nowadays everything is power operated strength isn't required.
