Vat question

Hi all,
I am in annoyed with Plusnet who have just stopped showing the VAT element of the Phone/broadband bill.
Granted this is a domestic account, changing to a business one will effectively double the cost!!

Question is, Is it legal to not show the VAT amount on this bill or any domestic bill to which it is applied?

Just deduct VAT can you ?

I think that it would be legal. If it is a domestic account then presumably few of their customers could reclaim the vat element of the bill. The invoice should have their vat registration number, and as a registered trader they will apply vat to all their bills.

I guess it may be a pain but by multiplying by 0.83 (100 divided by 120) you can work out the net figure, and hence the vat charged/reclaimable.

If you delve into the plusnet website, they have their very own forum for people who want to talk about phone bills. This subject seems to have really touched a nerve, and there are pages of discussion about it. I seem to recall that the upshot was that you can now have a VAT invoice if you request one

HMRC set a figure (used to be £75) below which an invoice doesn't have to display vat separately. As long as their vat number is on you can calculate the vat element yourself. This applies to till receipts too. Lots of people don't know this and miss out on getting vat back. Check HMRC website for current level. If I have time I'll check later when on the pc not this bloomin phone [emoji16][emoji16]

Thanks, that's handy to know. I've always just claimed the VAT on small business items invoiced like that, but assumed it would be picked up on if I ever get a VAT inspection. I've not been bending the rules after all.:)

I had to do that 4 years ago, last time they changed their invoicing. Put me back on a domestic invoice now too.:banghead:

I've just bought a bath, shower etc to re do the bathroom in the farmhouse, most of it from the local branch of the bathstore. After asking, I finally got a vat invoice but with no vat number on it. So phoned them back again, to be told there invoices don't come with a vat number, but happily supplied it separately. Is it ok for me to scribble it on their invoice ?

Are you sure the lady on the till didn’t scribble it on for you?
