Wheat drilling

You guys who haven’t drilled any wheat yet must be on light land? Or is the blackgrass that bad you’re prepared to risk yield loss from later sowing in return for a big hit on this awful weed?

On very heavy land here, blackgrass used to be horrific some years, but last week Oct/1st week Nov is winning the war very quickly, no real yield loss from blackgrass last year with yields very little reduced from what used to be normal of a 1st week Oct drilling a few years ago.
What is sometimes forgotten is the reduced growing costs of slightly later drilling, .. no aphicides, no PGR and 2 fung is plenty.
The real skill comes from making weatherproof cultivation's to allow later drilling.

We sprayed off some BG in emerging oats this weekend. The oats are popping through, probably about 10%, some with green leaf. We shall see how much damage has been done!

What product do you use to kill the bg in the oat crop?

Thank you very much from Spain

Whats your approach for the cultivations to allow you to drill late in any conditions? and what drill are you using?

Generally a freeflow drill, especially as it gets wetter, (the combi is only any good on clay before it gets too wet) we work it deep, subsoiling or ploughing try to get it well dried out before weathering, then set drill to do whatever cultivating it needs to take out wheelings and level it up, which means lots of power and speed.

How well does a free flow work with all those wheels our old Mf30 wheels will stall here if I drill on a dew in late oct

I demoed one alongside our Claydon a couple of years ago direct into wheat stubbles and it blocked up on every bout :(

I also demoed one 3 years ago. Let's just say it wasn't a success on trashy uneven min tilled ground. I still use the yield map as a discussion point to groups as to why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover! I'm not saying it's rubbish, just not for me then. Still looking for a second hand Horsch CO6 or 8 as a no till drill for the future - perhaps a second hand Cayena might be worth a look if it will take Metcalfes or Dutch openers?
