Cell counts.

Hi I’m just trying to analyse if the changes we have made here have made any real difference or is it down to the season.

Barbers kindly put group figures up for comparison and this October producer avg was 173 compared with 166 for October 2017. Suggesting a slight rise though new farms have joined in the last 12 months.

Was wondering how others have fair this season ?

Ours has been the worst in 15 years lowest 201 high 743 average 301, but all sub clinical, very little cases of actual mastitis, combination of snow in the spring with overstocking as lost a roof to snow and just didn't come back down from that, vet has advised us to do blanket treatment and dry high/problem cows off for 90 days, which we have done before with problem cows and seems to work.

change from 166 to 173 is not exactly significant, especially in what is presumably a relatively small group? Our sccs are lower, but we have put new shed and cubicles up and that was the desired outcome!

160 odd farmers in the producer group. Ours is substantially lower for doing less than before. Just trying to work out whethe coincidence or not.

What's people's opinions on low cell counts, ours seem to be under 100 ,some down to single figures. All well and good till they get mastitis then it seems to hammer them hard. Have been just teat sealing for a couple of years and the odd one with duct. Cell count has come down but is it counter productive being too low.?

Lowest we’ve had this past twelve months as well as a rolling average, since June we’ve had one result come back over 100 and currently sitting around 70-85,no sick cows either so I wouldn’t say low is bad it’s just all about the management

No.
The only time this is a possibility is if cell count is low because the cows are sick and have a depressed immune system. Not likely and you will know if that’s happening.

People with high cell counts like to use the too low excuse for their high cell counts.
