Time we were out of the EU!

Actually the EU is more democratic than the UK government with an elected European Parliament and the Commission. In the case of the latter the Commission can only propose laws in those areas where the EU governments have unanimously agreed to allow it to do under the EU treaty. Put another way, the Commission can only propose EU laws in areas where the UK government and the House of Commons has allowed it to do so. Also, ‘proposing’ is not the same as ‘deciding’. A Commission proposal only becomes law if it is approved by both a qualified-majority in the EU Council (unanimity in many sensitive areas) and a simple majority in the European Parliament.

Second, the Commission President and the Commissioners are indirectly elected, under article 17 of the EU Treaty, as amended by the Lisbon Treaty, the Commission President is formally proposed by the European Council (the 28 heads of government of the EU member states), by a qualified-majority vote, and is then ‘elected’ by a majority vote in the European Parliament.

Meanwhile we have an unelected House of Lords, a Prime Minister and the British cabinet are who are not 'directly elected’, an unelected civil Service and an unelected head of state based on their supposed genetic superiority.
I must of missed the vote i had for junker

Delusional. You have no more control or influence in Westminster than you do in Brussels.

I agree. At least Brussels gave us the CAP. See what Gove is doing with the Agriculture Bill. Not even a promise of any support beyond 2022 if you read the wording carefully. The Treasury will look to cut any spending that doesn't generate votes.

But presumably you need long dry spells to kill it.
I rarely use Roundup, but by crikey, I'd still like it in the armoury.
yes it needs to dry out .

and yes me too its quite useful sometimes but I could manage without it

Turbo please pay attention! In Gove’s brave new world the UK is going to be greener than the EU. He has already banned metaldehyde because it is “harmful to wildlife”. Even you must be able to see where this is heading in or out of the EU.
GOVE won't be here for ever though ,he will move or be moved on,anyway after tonight it may be a Labour ag minister

Sounds like a plan. When I farmed organically, we resorted to digging docks out with a garden fork. I'm too old for that sh!te now.:D

Wouldn't like to be a no tiller without Roundup.

Jean-Claude Juncker was the first elected president of the European commission. He was the candidate put forward by the party who obtained the most votes at the latest European elections in 2014

On 27 June 2014, the heads of state and government in the council voted by qualified majority in favour of Juncker as the next commission president. On 15 July, parliament voted by absolute majority in favour of Juncker the next president.

You may not like the result but it's a lot more democratic than nearly 800 in the House of Lords; some there because of their birth and others because of patronage and priviledge.

I once worked for an organic dairy farmer who had rotavated (believe it or not) a dock infested field a couple of times and said that had got rid of a lot of them, I never saw it happen as I wasn't there long but he wasn't the sort to bs

It doesn't matter the fact remains that the EU is more democratic than the UK

The Cambridge dictionary defines democracy as, "The belief in freedom and equality between people, or a system of government based on this belief, in which power is either held by elected representatives or directly by the people themselves". All the three main executive and legislative institutions in the EU have direct democratic legitimation, unlike the UK.

Times have moved on. They do these in 6 meter now, and are very effective. We had a filthy couch fiel that cam out of HLS and it cleaned it in 2 passes.

So loads of diesel and cultivations. Pretty good for the environment and world that. But then when I have heard Mr Gove speaks he waxes lyrical about no till cultivations. If it were not potentially so serious it would be farcical. Hey ho there you go.

TBF to Gove he probably represents the best of that Brexit bunch. His narrative could translate into a workable green framework for uk ag. At least he’s saying something that isn’t totally consumed by brexshit. The rest of them, like Fox and Loathesome would feed us to their “free” trade mates in the USA.
Farmers have no chance of influence with labour. Given the utter shambles in Westminster and the arrogant nasty lying disunity of the Tory party I’d vote anything to get them out, but not because I am a farmer. Corbyn just won’t be interested. :)

It amazes me that 21st century farmers can only "farm" using chemicals, whereas their grandfathers had to deal with weeds using appropriate husbandry* techniques.

As for threads on TFF "what cultivator do I need" well, words fail me.

* method of farming utilising crop rotations and cultivation to reduce and eradicate weeds and preserve natural fertility--for more information ask anyone over 60.
My grand father who started farming in the 1920s when asked about organic farming and not using chemicals said he would never want to go back to a chemical free farming system
Hoeing was the main weed control and was very hard work keeping many people employed
I no till all my crops using a fraction of the fuel and tractor hours we used to use there is much more wildlife in my fields worm numbers have multiplied many times there is a whole ecosystem of soil living animals that are much reduced by cultivation
Without round up or an equivalent chemical the plough is the only option
My cultivating neighbours all use round up in greater quantities per ha with more passes per year than my once per crop
I am now looking at swathing rape again as it relies on the highest dose and serves very little purpose last year due to drought we left rape undesicated
