Well, no one could really say she is in control.

Theresa May is demonstrably in control.

It's just that the EU deal was rejected by the biggest margin in history.

Looks as though the "Only deal" on offer by the EU is DEAD. In fact I think it couldn't be more dead.

If onus is now on the EU to come up with another deal .. except they don't have one that won't be rejected.

Oh dear .. what a shame.

I'm not so sure if it is dead . If they can remove the backstop it's very much alive

The woman is deluded , that shitty deal will be back in a week or 2 ,

I doubt it.

£39 Billion for no date to leave, no date for a trade deal .. it's still open ended with nothing firm.

The ERG have full control because Labour will block vote against any agreement .. same for SNP .. Liberals might vote for some very strong EU deal.

The numbers are just not there.

Corbyn wants maximum pain so he can ride on his white charger to the rescue .. in a general election. Whether we are in the EU or not doesn't matter.

The SNP just want Scotland to leave .. doesn't matter if we are in the EU or not. Preferrably not for the SNP.

Liberals just want to be in the EU.

The Mandelson tax law ..

"The Mandelson Pension Clause: The UK must promise never to tax former EU officials based here – such as Peter Mandelson or Neil Kinnock – on their E.U. pensions, or tax any current Brussels bureaucrats on their salaries. The EU and its employees are to be immune to our tax laws. (Article 104)"

When I lived in Brussels some 20+ years ago .. if you went shopping .. the first comment that was asked was "Do you work for the EU ?" .. because you are immediatly VAT exempt. I think VAT was 22.5% at that time.

On the few occasions where referenda have had three questions, the two highest rated go on to fight it out in another referendum...

But still bl**dy awful:

https://spectator.us/40-horrors-theresa-mays-brexit-deal/

Thank you for posting that link to The Spectator article. I may well download the Withdrawl Agreement and this weekend set about reading it (bit tricky for me as a non lawyer but I will have a go) to check it out first hand. I am still irritated when I hear MPs interviewed asked if they have read the agreement and the reply is 'well know but have been briefed'. I always recall Ken Clarke saying he never read the Maastricht Treaty as a matter of pride.

If it is half as bad as The Spectator synopsis it is awful. I am fast becoming reconciled to two positions for UK. 1 Remain and go back to June 22 2016. 2 Leave no deal.

I have read all relevant law from the Treaty of Rome onwards, it is all pretty depressing if you are not a fan of a super-state; however, if you are a fan of a super-state, it's rather reassuring - although still dull.

You really don't need any legal training or experience to get your head around the WA, providing you are prepared to put some time into it. If you don't understand / follow something, just read it again until you do; the words are all commonplace, it is just the overall volume that seems intimidating.

That's fair enough, but I'm guessing you can pick up any dictionary with many more pages and happily read a relevant section without any problem. If you think of the WA, or other legislation, in the same way - lots of small sections - you'll be fine.

Ken Clarke was and is a prig, although unlike many Tory 'remain' MPs he isn't a liar or a hypocrite; he has a good name at the Bar. It is a rather sad, but nonetheless relevant, fact that his more vehemently europhile side, with a devil-may-care attitude, really came to the fore following his wife's death. A pity.

I would prefer an equitable deal, but I am not afraid of leaving without one because there would be one very soon afterwards.

All parliament has to do is nothing, which is exactly what they are doing. We leave with no deal by default.
That's what I thought the vote was for the deal or no deal unless the EU come back with a better offer, but there are that many stories in the media its hard to know what to believe, if it is right remain labour MP's really are idiots.

Any non Belgian resident would also have had that same option, as technically anyone in the EU purchasing goods and taking them home does not pay tax.
Of course on line shopping has refined this , and Amazon deliver them to your door tax free

Anyone buying goods in Belgium in a shop cannot avoid VAT. In fact I don't know of any European shop that doesnt charge VAT.

Of course you would be subject to proof you were exporting the items you bought .. EU staff are not exporting, they are living in Brussels.

As regards online shopping .. I don't buy from USA Amazon so cannot state from experience. But I have bought air brake master cylinders from a small company in Mexico .. paid VAT.

For what its worth i think May is playing a blinder. She knows the importance of respecting the first vote and the implications any second vote would have on our democracy. You simply can not ask the question time and time again until you get the answer you want. If a second referendum was granted, Westminster would have to let Scotland have another independence referendum as well. Worst case this could result in a second leave win, followed by a Scottish referendum to leave the Uk and re join the EU. It simply cannot be allowed.

May knows her deal is pants, and she will spend the rest of the month lobbying ministers, before a second vote that she will know doubt loose as well. Comerade Corbyn will then have another punt at a vote of no confidence which he will loose. More debate will ensue and more days will pass, and before we know it, it will be too late to do or change anything, and by default we will leave the EU on March 29th
