And he wants to destruct them, Winston Churchill promoted a United States of Europe to try and bring an end to the destruction.

He also insisted that Prussia cease to exist after the war, saying that it was the cause of all the trouble in Europe, or words to that effect. You might wipe the name off the map but you can't alter the teleology it would seem.

The idea is not without its advocates over here, but realistically I can't see it happening. For better or worse the whole Irish establishment has fallen into the arms of the EU and the EU way of thinking. It's probably just laziness on their behalf, but that's the state of play.

Just returning to the point about the United States of Europe. It has often been noted that Sinn Fein are hard set against being under British rule, yet they are more than happy to accept the dominance of the EU, maybe it was just a way out of the impasse without losing face.

Traditionally SF were opposed to the EU project, then come the referendum there was slight surprise when they came out in support of continued UK membership. Suggestion from some remain campaigners in NI was they did very little campaigning, they didn't register as an official campaign organisation etc. Their support is presumably opportunistic.

But it's not a free trade area, is it?
The costs are enormous.
The world is a far larger area to exploit than a constrictive portion of Europe.
Which European country is Eire's largest, soon to be non free trade, customer?

You are only considering agricultural goods, economy here is small open economy with large big pharma and electronics that are sold into wider market than just UK. It makes way more sense for us to continue with access to larger free market within EU, and the trade deals the EU can organise with the rest of the world as a small open economy.

Thank you.
My post above was more to encourage such a response.
I am not so blind to see that Eire has more to offer than fantastic butter and beef.
I have drunk draught Guiness in Cape Town. (Although it's probably produced locally under licence). Lol

Everything has a cost.

If we do have a no deal exit, we can revisit the costs of trading on WTO terms in a couple of years.

Theresa May's deal ties the UK to the EU indefinately.

No end date, no start of trade deal talks, fixed VAT rates for 8 years beyond the final leave date, if a deal does not exist for the UK to leave judged by the EU, then the UK moves into a state where the UK ceases to exist and ALL activites are run by the EU - that's ECJ, Tax, Foreign policy everything.

It's time Remainers grew up .. Remainers are literally giving the UK away.

The German establishment wants the UK to stay in the EU – of course they do
By JOHNREDWOOD | Published: JANUARY 18, 2019
There should be no surprise that senior German government figures want the UK to stay in the EU. They show their scorn for democracy by asking for that and take us for fools. They want the UK to keep on paying huge sums of money to help with the costs of their political and monetary union which we have never wanted to join. They want the EU to write our laws for us to help their commercial interests. They want to keep UK tariffs high on cars and food from the rest of the world to ensure they run a huge trade surplus with us at the expense of UK consumers. If I were a German politician I would be desperate for the UK to sign the Withdrawal Agreement or cancel Article 50 as that would be great for Germany. It would also mean the UK looking stupid in the eyes of the rest of the world as we dithered and then climbed down over our future, saying we cannot manage to be independent and govern ourselves

Thanks, its real pity this debate hasn't encouraged more rational dialogue in the UK, looking in it looks like a push for power rather than any rational discussion. Watched is it newsnight last night and bar a university fella who didn't really focus on a side there wasn't a rational thought put forward on panel or in the audience.

The EU is more than just a large Free trade area, it is also a union of Nations to work together for the greater good of all members, the wealthier nations contribute more and the disadvantaged nations receive payments to lift their general standard of living ,whilst the administration is far from ideal the general concept has worked well. I believe Ireland was a recipient of EU funds in the past and may still be.

Just under 50% of the UK support the EU with a slightly higher percentage wanting to go it alone, which ever way you look at it the vote was close, so by its very nature this has created division across the UK.

The UK has voted to leave and if Teresa May is to be believed "leave means leave" which is fine, it makes little difference to me. But just because the UK has decided to leave why then try and break the rest of the EU with scurrilous claims regarding the EU followed by suggestions that the rest of the EU is crumbling and many other countries want to leave. We have a lot of visitors from Europe and I have yet to meet one who either wants to leave the EU or thinks the UK is making the right choice by voting to leave.

An Eirexit and them joining us in a free trade group would make more sense.

It would, long term, but remember they would have to leave the Euro and return to their own currency, that would not be straight forward by any means. They would also lose the EU protections and money they have been given. It could be done, provided the UK gave them a cast iron trading relationship; you could readily justify this on a political basis however as being in the interests of all parties concerned. The EU would get their money back, plus the interest and all would be happy.

I do not know how much trade Eire do with the rest of Europe.

It has not 'worked well'- ask the Spanish, Greeks or Italians.

Churchill said a lot of similarly daft things and only got his position because of someone being similarly daft. What he said or did is of utterly no consequence now. Talked a good talk, fortunately people believe him, but in practical matters, jaysus.

Sounds like project fear to me.

If it was project fear then it would be plastered all over the Brussels Broadcasting Corporation .. and George Soros would be pumping out the adverts on Facepain.

Instead it's published in a small USA journal.

Just admit it .. the UK media establishment are pants.

Brexit if nothing else has highlighted the farce that is the UK media, the farce of UK politics and the domination of most organisations by people totally unrepresentative of the general public.
