County Defender

It depends upon how old you are looking .but as I recall on the later models the difference was cloth seats, rear windows to the sides of the rear door and alpine roof windows with a rear section roof headlining. County spec may have included electric windows, but I can't remember!

Did any County have a white roof?

Colour coded wheel arch spats. Cloth seats not vinyl. Colour coded roof option.

My 110 County had the stripes, 12 seats in cloth, carpets and umm, power steering and radial tyres [7.50R16]. I don't remember any other extras. The then new 2.5 naturally aspirated engine with all of 67 hp plus the LT77 5 speed main gearbox. Also the full time 4wd two speed transfer case which was originally optional [for the first year] on the 110.

Everything that could go wrong with it, did go wrong. It was a f**king disaster of a vehicle. I bought a second one in 1984, a 110 Hi-Cap pickup which has wind down windows. This was a different kettle of fish and was very reliable for 22 years until it was worn out and scrapped. The County was changed for a new V8 Range Rover Vogue in 1986, which was OK but not particularly liked, being thirsty and not co-operative on damp mornings and had a very whiney transfer box. That was changed for a diesel Vogue manual in 88 which has a modified quieter transfer box [same mod made to production Defenders] which went round the clock with no bother.

Basically a County is a station wagon version of Defender with a somewhat higher 'luxury' specification than standard. It uses the same drivetrain as the Mk1 Range Rover and Discovery 1 and 2, depending on when it was built.

Not all County Defenders are station wagons. I’ve got a 90 hard top with County pack (2010). It had (until I changed them), cloth seats instead of vinyl. Colour coded wheel arches. Alloy wheels. Headlining in the rear. A small window either side of the rear door. It may have a couple of other bits but I think I’ve covered the major differences.

Ah but that is a County option pack not a County model designation. Yes, County option pack could be specified on non-station wagons from some point. It would be called a 'Defender 90 with County Pack', tow pack and so on. Most late County and County Pack I've noticed have metallic paint. Not sure whether that was part of the pack or yet another option.

Yes, but the op is referencing a 63 plate pickup, so County pack would be relevant in his case.

Yes, and the rest of the truck is also very date-dependent as well. 63 will probably have the Ford 2.2 engine as fitted to Ford Ranger, but detuned, and the same manual gearbox also. All kinds of weird sh!t [for a Defender] like electric windows, central locking and air-con may or may not be fitted.

For some strange reason, LR often were making models and selling ,and the spec which it came with depended on whatever someone in Solihull had got too many of that day.
In truth I suspect most were churned out for corporate or military orders and the just made runs of models.
When I collected my 50th. Edition I asked where the remotelocking fob was. The saleman said it was not a standard fitting and checked through his spec sheet. No definitely not one.
3 months later on a weekend she refused to start, had to call LR assist, guy comes out, wheres the key fob? I said it never had one. It apparently had an isolator which had been activated. They had to remove it to get me going.

From your knowledge, does all county have coloured roof? Or do some have white roof?

County = white roof. County pack = body coloured roof. Later models could also have a contrast colour.
County had cloth seats, radio, head lining, alpine lights, heated rear window, wiper & rostyle wheels. Could be had as van or SW.
county pack could be had on pick up as well & had the above but had metallic, central locking, electric windows - alloys were extra. Altho later standard. Heated screen & seats were also common. All the above on county & county pack were available as separate options so there are a good deal of defender types around! Our defenders were always basic but spec’d up to keep the vinyl seats.... my uncle always had county’s/packs & had nicer cloth ones.

County has plastic wheel arches
Steel wheels
White roof
No cubby box
Vinyl seats
Basically the lowest spec

Sounds like the one you’re looking at might be a county with upgraded alloys or they were added at a later date
