Mag drill recommendations

Another quick question before I splash out on a mag drill. Can they drill through both sides of a 50mm box section with the short cutters (or do you need longer version)
tbh i keep both types here, long and short but truth be told you would use the long cutter far more than a short one so imo it makes more sense to buy the long cutters than the short ones as it makes them more universal so to speak, only time id use the shorter ones id be restrictive access.
the longer ones are only a few quid more normally so their more of an all rounder.

my mag has a MT3 which makes it more universal but afaik your going to have to splash out more on one of them but in saying that i wouldnt have a mag without the option, then again mine will do up to 100mm dia hole so its not something youd be lugging up to the top of a stanchion with ease altho many times ive done so.

Why are the short cutters the most common to see for sale ? I don't have any long cutters.

I bought a S/H AEG mag drill from Done Deal a few years ago. I had crash barriers o drill for a cattle pen . A super tool.

probably because of a few reasons but im somewhat guessing here mind.
possible that the shop selling them didnt think about getting longer cutters into stock, an element of narrow mindedness perhaps.
or the cost to sell will be slightly higher for the long cutter so will make them look dearer than the other shop that sells them and to most they would just see a cutter (or broach to give its correct name) that drills a hole.
or its what the supplier stocked the shelf with and thats what they sell.

the shop i get mine at normally have short and long in every size and times the short cutter will do the job the best for most but the long one is far more universal in the long run.

i dont have any AEG tools here but from teardowns id see on the tube the stuff is good tack, its well made and has longevity built into it who are owned incidentally by TTI who also own or at the least are licenced to build milwaukee, ryobi, rigid, vax, homelite, dirt devil and hoover much in the same way black n decker or stanlley balck n decker now own B&D, bostich , DeWalt, porter cable, stanley, irwin, lenox, craftsman, blackhawk, bost, facom, britool, mac tools, lista, proto, sidchrome, hilmor, usag, vidmar along with a few others mostly marketed in the usa so your buying a uniquely branded tool but from the same mothership so to speak.

You'll need longer ones to be able to reach to do both holes in one go, we are doing that same job atm, done 120 holes in fraction of time it would of taken pillar drill to do
we have a morse taper attachment that fits in pillar drill to take rotor broach cutters will do 50mm box,Loads better than drill bit for drilling gate ends

There is a section on Magdrill.com where they have created a kit for farmers and basically solves this headache.

I will leave one here , we got it sent straight away and it does exactly what we wanted it too !! Would be handy if you posted some prices on here thou , bits etc , thanks

Thanks for your kind words!

We've got so much! Our cheapest "Farmers" Kit, is priced at £341.00 ex VAT. This includes our trademark Mag drill Machine "The Panther", along with a 14mm - 22mm cutter kit. This is then accompanied by a bottle of both cutting fluid and lubricant. To put it in perspective, it would cost you £395.00 ex VAT the purchase them individually - so not only are we saving you money, we're saving you the headache of wondering what you need to buy.

I have an evolution and it doesn't seem to hold on with the magnet very much. Is there anything you can check on them?
I have never been very impressed with it tbh.

You can get a Rotabroach Panther, they're reliable and sturdy. Magdrill.com also offer repairs in the UK, so it's a really worthwhile investment.

Sure you know but surface needs to be flat and clean (not rusty and pitted)and if metal your drilling is narrower than drill it will not be great for grip. It's usually the swath from previous holes which causes problems between magnet and surface.
Don t think there is anything to adjust/check, a magnet either works or not ?

Does anyone know where you would get the speed controller for a Rotabroach Panther at a sensible price. Mine has stopped working after having done very little work. I'm not sure whether to fix it or sell it as it is.

Did you get onto rotabroach to see how much one is from them, maybe tell them your plight n see if they would help a bit.
It's where I'd start anyways.

Last rotabroach spares I wanted came from magdrill.com. I'd previously got them direct from rotabroach but they then decided that they would not sell to a non dealer, so I went elsewhere.
