IH B250 - advice please

I am planning to drive my 1956 B250 around the coast of Cornwall- a round door to door trip of around 300 miles.

I have owned her for around 10 years and done nothing more arduous than short joy trips around the lanes and moor where we live.

Regarding maintenance she's had filters and oil replaced recently and seems to be tackling the steep hill roads without the normal hot smells and black smoke.

One consistent problem is a notable wobble coming from the front wheels to the steering wheel when at speed - to date I have let the pressure down on the front tyres which seems to help but not a 300 mile solution- any thoughts on this ?

The brakes are quite inefficient and need a lot of effort on the drivers part or using the gears - is this normal ?

It may be that I am over thinking the potential problems but is there any important pre trip work that I should be considering and should I take spares of anything which is likely to fail - if so what are the recommendations?

How many miles can I expect from a tank of diesel ?

Thanks in advance

Take plenty of supplies and how big is the caravan?

You may have a small bit of wear in a steering ball joint allowing the wheels to self steer?
Apart from that expect the worst and hope for the best ..............

Good luck .........

with regards the steering, it will be play in the steering box most likely, try a turn shorter on one of the drag links from steering box to front wheel, either side will do , which ever is easiest to do, this will tie it in a little and that should sort it, as now they will be running dead straight to wobble as they do, and blow tyres back up to 28 psi

brakes are easy to reline, set of discs from Vapourmatic are good,

fuel use will be about 80 litres

spares, a pto driven air pump for tyres, if a puncture, can keep blowing it up to limp to get it mended, fan belt, fuel filter, enough tools the change and fit the above,

and a tin box to sit on the gearbox big enough to hold 2 Cornish pasties,

Good point about the punctures, wee drop of OKO or the like might be handy?

Some people used say that using OKO , or similar, would rot tubes and tyres ?
Possibly the tyres that people were putting it into , to try and prolong their life , were in their 11 th hour anyway , and already fairly rotten?

We find it good, especially for low pressure tubeless that goes down over several weeks, it would be a nightmare to fix without the trye sealer (OKO or similar).

If its a 56 then it will have the double rod steering box. Also removing the steering wheel so you can remove the diesel tank to get to the steering box is a pain. I've been heating the joint and oiling and pulling at it for 20 years and still never managed to get it off. Dont want to cut the wheel up.

Have you checked the front wheel bearings? Juck up each and gove them a good wobble. Any play and you should have them rebearinged. Also check no play in steering ball joints when the jack is out
