My wife has recently been diagnosed with Parkinson's
She is only 49

She is now in the limbo stage following diagnosis but before seeing the specialist and before starting medication.

Any advice gratefully received

Thank you

Very sorry to read this, Bruce. My, but your family has had a time of it.

Would The Parkinson's Society have a support group near you? www.parkinsons.org.uk . One of my cousins has early onset Parkinson's and is on medical cannabis oil.
He says it helps a great deal with his mobility - I presume it's prescribed by a Specialist.

There is more and more that can be done to control symptoms, and slow the progress of the disease. It's nothing like the situation for mum's aunt and one of her cousins over 20 years ago.

There is a heck of a lot of medication available but you have to take it regularly, several times per day. It may seem baffling at first but there are specialist groups as mentioned above to help you, make as much use of them as you need. Don't be afraid to find a friendly specialist pharmacist who can advise you about them.

It is a condition more readily understood now and there is greater awareness of it. It remains a sod of a disease as I well know as my father in law has it. The way in which the condition progresses and how it affects people varies a fair bit between individuals, try not to panic too much just yet, with medication some people are able to manage the condition very very well though it often involves a huge array of medications. If you build these into a routine it is not too onerous.

Specialist OTs can also help by giving patients with the condition various exercises to practice which may help in specific situations.

Mum had Parkinson's for about 18 years (passed away last year) It was only in the last 5 years that the disease became much of a problem, for most of the time the only visible symptom would be a tremor in her hand, (which was controlled by medication, you could tell if she was due a tablet or had missed one, and symptoms would go within about half an hour after taking the tablet)
I know there are advances in medication and treatment all the time and it is a very "individual" disease with most having slightly different combinations of symptoms, consider any possible long term effects of taking medication (something which caused mum problems in later years)
Parkinson's specialist nurse, provided the best help, if they are available in your area, (where we are Parkinson's seemed to be very under funded, clinics were always packed out)
PM me if I can help anymore.
