Some farmers now actually believe their own sh!t doesnt smell.

And on the other extreme some farmers live in there own sh!t so long they no longer know it smells. But the same extremes exist in all walks of life. Nobody’s perfect but I know which end of the spectrum I would rather try and be at, but I do agree with @abitdaft sometimes compromises need to be made.

A pile of shyte pushed just through the gate into the back field.

A nice big yard filled with old shyte that makes driving through it a slalom course that is impossible with anything over 18 feet long.

The front of the house is painted & looks lovely, the back is up against the collecting yard, is green with shyte & the cows lick the kitchen window.

Post of the year for me anyway.
Hilarious because its so true

Farms often look different in winter compared to summer, our is lovely when dry and sunny, come winter the drive is a shith0le, it depresses us and makes work tougher, but we are aware of it and really don't need it pointing out to us! We do our best to keep things as decent as we can. There must be some perfect farms out there when it warrants a thread moaning about others. I wonder where the perfect farmers put their deadstock awaiting collection or what they do about their muddy spots or when the bull wrecks the gate and you have to tie it up with string in the meantime? Some places may be a bit run down, but unless you know the reason behind it maybe wise to keep your own counsel?
A very good post, and agree entirely.I think some of the posts put up are absolutely appalling. No one knows some of the circumstances or problems on some farms, they can be physical, mental, monetary,or a mix of all those.Calling someone elses farm a shithole is one of the worst forms of abuse in my opinion.Usually said by a neighbour that is jealous,or has a personal gripe over some matter.I have one of these, and over the years i have watched their farm(s) on passing, and come to the conclusion they are not any better farming or tidier than anyone else.

Huge difference between arable and livestock. If a cow craps in the yard here it wouldn’t be noticed but in an arable yard it would be multiple beacons on a million hp fendt, brush on the front linkage with the sub millimetre accurate gps to get the brush widths in line with the perfectly sealed expansion joint in the 9” reinforced concrete.

I can't abide slovenliness or untidiness.

The same people often moan about how they are overloaded or can't cope. But then they spend half their time looking for things or struggling day in day out with crap that would take an hour to fix once and for all, while saying they need "me" time or a holiday which just let's the problems stack up even higher.

If they got up earlier and did a full days work they would sleep better as well.

......if only I could stick to my own advice.

I have found over the years that some quite rough looking farms contain some of the best stock you’re likely to see and also some of the best people. But not always!

On a similar note, I ordered two grease guns over the phone from a place in Coventry a few years ago, never having dealt with them before. I took my lad to collect them, he was about 7 at the time.

We pulled up and I thought we must have gone wrong. There was a row of about 10 terraced houses, plain types. In the middle was one with rotten window frame and grubby glass. We went in and the reception was about 5 ft square, strewn with stuff all over the place. There was bits and bobs everywhere, all over the floor and counter. Bearings, belts, tubes, clamps, jubilees, cable ties, oils, aerosol cans of everything conceivable, grease cartridges etc etc etc.

The place was tiny but the stock was amazing. Just as the store man poked his head around the wall my lad piped up with. “ Blimey Dad, it’s a right mess in ‘ere!”
All I could do was say “well, sometimes they’re the best places to go shopping “
