How many cattle will be using the trough @holwellcourtfarm?

I had a plastic trough last year I kept moving on one block last year but one problem I had was they kept emptying it and then knocking it over.
It'll only be serving 54. I did consider making it a dual trough, side by side, but thought I didn't need to for the number of cattle and it would get too heavy.

I've considered turning our olf Pettit 3 ton trailer into a mobile tanker/trough with the trough fitted across the back. I could then graze the fields with no water supply.

@Pan mixer what size tank have you got on there and when you move it do you have to empty the trough and lift it up?

Nice work by the way.
That is a 5000 litre static tank, yes I would have to empty it to move it but I haven't moved it for 3 years and don't plan to either, the mobile tank with baffles was a lot more expensive.

The trough will lift up easily with a forklift and a couple of pins go under it to hold it.

Next time I would put the trough across the back I think but am using pasture pumps in places now and have borrowed someone elses metred supply for other fields so this one stays where it is.

My tank has distorted with moving it full of water and being a static version

We've been using these micro troughs from kiwitech. Need to be connected to a pipe, but really simple to move through the grazing with the cattle.

Kiwitech troughs are the business.

I use one of these with upto 80 dairy cows and it keeps up. They are very well built, and have the best float design I have seen.

I also use the micro troughs on groups upto 40-50 but I dont think they are suitable for sheep.

I have about 4 permanent troughs on 170ac, and so often have 300m+ of pipe attached, and upto 600m. I just leave 150m lengths where they are needed - 25mm MDPE is quite cheap (y)

How do you get around the issue with them not being able to be connected to a mains supply?

Water tank on a hill presumably. Think he has one or two of those. Hills, that is. :)

As above (y) tank on top of a big hill, all gravity fed. Cows are about 1m below the bottom of the tank tonight, but a short run of pipe and an excellent full flow valve design means flow is still pretty good. In summer I do tend to run two, mainly as there is quite a lot of use as the cows come back to the paddock, and it stops the bulls hanging around the trough pissing all the cows off.

but if you connect to the mains, who's to know

How big are your tanks?
