"We are short of resources, could you take your dog out and check round your buildings"

There is no wonder that the Police claim they are short of resources. In July 2017, my car was broken into and several small items were taken. It seems that a couple of low-lifes went along our road breaking into any car they took a fancy to. They were apprehended by the local police who said they were passing ( more likely taking a break inside) the local McD's.. The perps were caught red-handed with all of the loot, charged and bailed. A full year later, they were summoned to court for a preliminary hearing, one turned up and pleaded not guilty, the other one appeared to have left the country. Another 6 months, another court date, the missing guy had turned up but the hearing was adjourned. I've just (April 2019) received a letter from the CPS informing me that the case has been dropped due to lack of evidence. The scum were caught in possession of material belonging to me and my neighbours. How can there be any lack of evidence? If they had been hauled into court on the day they were caught and punished the action would have been quick, cost effective and would have sent a message to the crim fraternity. I am in two minds whether to write to the CPS and accuse them of blatant waste of police time.

There's plenty of them on the job, they just pick and choose what they want to respond to.
A car slid off the road and through a hedge here, noone hurt, but three police cars and two fire engines for the evening to watch it get towed out by a recovery truck.
I found a stolen landrover behind a straw stack, very obviously stashed there by the Irish traveling brethren, and Essex police didn't want to have anything to do with it. (A bit of detective work on my part traced it to north London, and the Met took a rather different view, and pulled out all the stops. Possibly because they're more efficient, but equally possible that it was a nice trip out to the countryside for two carloads, and pikeys are an unknown novelty to them).

We had a battery nicked off the tractor and a few hand tools. Derbyshire police were out that afternoon so not all bad. Really nice PC and was going to ring round scrap yards etc

hmm. a pal of mine has had several nocturnal visits. on one of them, a load of hand/power tools went.
plod weren't very interested.
a week or two later, the tools were noticed for sale on some website/social media page.... the man selling them was easily contacted, and I recall had evidently been trading lots of stuff.
Here you go plod, this is the man. They couldn't be ersed.

Meanwhile, close around me, several nice rural houses are occupied by retired middle ranking and up cops, who stop work younger than I am now, and straight away draw pensions headed toward 6 figures annually.
One household consists of a him and her, both retired cops with some rank. Combined household income well into 6 figures.

I'm uncomfortable with this state of affairs.

Only had to call the police once so far (touch wood), when I found a group of blokes inspecting my Defender in the dead of night. Quick response from the police, they came back the next day and fitted cameras for 4 weeks just in case the would be thieves came back. Can't reall fault them, from experience, though I can see other instances where they've been useless.

As for more tax, maybe I'd consider supporting it when those in power stop squandering their current tax take. Until then, no way!

A single sheep loose on the A17 in S Lincs a few weeks ago and at one point FIVE police cars in pursuit in an incident that lasted several hours. They were on the point of calling the firearms unit when a local woman told them to stop chasing it en masse with fluorescent jackets and she quietly shooed the poor exhausted thing into her back garden and caught it on her own.
