we need youngsters coming into the industry, so we should look after them well, you quickly see the no hopers, they are best rid, but if you have one that looks as if he is going to be good, look after him/her , so low pay for the beginning, but ramp it up if he/her is good. how much is a good worker worth to you? how much work is he saving you? does it mean you can spend more time on the dreaded paperwork? if the answer is yes, then pay him well, we would say £6 an hour for the first month, then £10 if he's good. if you pay him well, he talks to his mates, who then think about what he gets, and hopefully look at ag with a view to worh

I started 7 weeks ago, I’m left to do alternate weekends with help if necessary from the person doing the feeding. I’ve worked on farms before. I was offered assistant farm manager to learn milking for the first 2 weeks to then move onto more managerial roles but been on milking the whole time now. No accommodation and I live 30miles away

If your left alone, then catch a pay rise

Thanks for the replies. I only agreed to minimum wage for the first month whilst I learnt the ropes, i wouldn’t have agreed if i knew it was just milking and cleaning the yard I’ve done plenty of cleaning jobs in my time. His excuse is he doesn’t have time to teach me the other jobs but this could go on for months

Where in the country are you? Someone on here may be able to make a better offer, or know someone who can. People willing to work on dairies are a bit rare

Hi I know other people offering more it’s the fact it’s minimum wage and I’m not doing the job he offered. I’m covering all his needs so he can work on other jobs instead of him letting me do those other jobs.

Sorry to join this post, I’m over 25 and working 5-1 and alternate weekends 5-10 3-7 and get paid 8.21. Some of you are suggesting a 16year old to be paid £10. Do I need to question this?

Fudge that. 10 quid minimum. More if you are milking. Fudge them off and find somewhere else.

How the fudge can you afford to work for £8 an hour if you are over 25 and doing 60 miles a day in travelling?

where are you? the lack of labour, esp milkers in the west country is chronic, if he leaves you to get on with it on your own, you must be fairly good, get the farming jobs adverts up, tell him you want £15 hr, or you have somewhere else to go to, if he wants to keep you, he will pay

Often "wise guys" get youngsters in on an apprenticeship and pay them the minumum wages possible then when qualify and get older they turn around and say no job position available but then go on and get another kid.
Bad.
Some farmers around here and other businesses carry on with this for years.

We try to keep someone at apprentice grade. May pay a bit higher than minimum.
However we make clear you wont progress with us but I will guarantee that if you do well you will progress in the industry.
A farm with 2 or 3 members of staff is likely to always have a need for an extra pair of hands and if you expect all apprentices to progress within a business someone else will have to move out or they will still be left doing the lower order jobs just paid better.

If you want to be assistant manager you need a bit of experience milking first

His herdsman that has been there for 6 years is still on £9hr no accom, no overtime rate, always on call, left on farm by himself the majority of the time. Yep

He said he would only pay the absolutely highest calibre £10. His herdsman picks out all sick cows, milks any day required, gets on with anything needed dairy related.
