As an ex-Agricultural Engineer I have finally realised a dream of owning a classic MF65, to polish, fettle and get me out of the house. I did my apprentaship on Masseys in the 1970’s and have a soft spot for them. I have an ambition to learn to plough and maybe try my hand at ploughing competitions. The only field operation I have never done is ploughing (the two farms I worked on contracted out the ploughing and subsoiling annually, pity they didn’t do the same with muck spreading but that’s another story).

My missus is talking to me again so I thought that I am safe to start looking around for a two or three furrow plough, but nothing seems to come up locally. I live in mid Essex, between Chelmsford and Harlow. I have seen a nice MF plough in Norfolk but have no way of getting it home since the wife refused to have it in the back of her VW Golf, even though I promised to cover the back seats. So can anyone recommend a company, Essex or east Anglian based, that would collect and deliver a plough. A Hiab would probably be needed as I have no way of getting it off the lorry here.

Also, whilst on the subject can anyone suggest an Essex club or individual that might help me learn to match plough, I have joined FOFH but nothing local.

Thank you.

Lovely story- well done !!
Sorry I can’t help as no where near, just enjoyed reading it !!
Do you know anyone with a flat bed ifor Williams trailer that would nip & pick it up? Or would it go on a pallet then courier?
Good luck with it & hope you enjoy!!
Cheers dh

Thanks Dirty Harry, I will look into couriers but they tend to be a bit expensive. Now you mention it I do know one chap with a flat bed trailor, might give him a call.

Thanks again mate.

Car trailer should do. Reverse under that tree behind the tractor, winch over the branch then drive away and lower it down. Better adventure than a pallet and a wee day out.

Well done, a great thing you have done! I know the Fyfield area well, and loads of farmers there. I suggest simply turning up at a few and ask if they have anything. A 2 furrow Fergie plough is what you want, but anything in the nettles is likely to be ceased in all the wrong places...
Try Brocks just west of Thaxted and Roy Boreham just south of Dunmow - both will be on Google for details and have loads of stuff. A 2 furrow plough probably won't be listed but there could be one somewhere in one of their yards. You are in the right area for something to turn up.
Also, come to the Essex Young Farmers Club show on Sunday 19 May at Boyton Hall, just west of Chelmsford. There are lots of vintage tractors there and the owners will be delighted to talk to you.
Good luck!

Thank you so much. I will certainly look those up. 19th May, we will put that in the diary now. I need to prove to the missus that I am not the only tractor enthusiast on the planet:)

Good idea Pete, Jeffrey Giblin is the knowledge. He lives in the Easters and will be at the show, probably on his Massey Harris with binder - easy to spot him, GP!

Lovely looking Massey that, I'm sure you are going to have a lot of fun with it, another person you could try re plough is Gavin argent of G K Argent tractor spares at Great Waldringfield he has a lot of Ferguson equipment tractors etc. Club wise have you thought about joining the Ferguson club. There is a new area rep for Essex who is a really nice chap and looking to organise meetings and events within the area. If interested I can pass on his details, all the best

Thank you. I joined the FOFH but will certainly contact the Ferguson Club, but if you have a local contact, so much the better, thank you very much. Making progress

A word of caution. Before investing in any plough, go to a few matches, and see which type of work interests you most. Then, talk to the people doing it, get an idea as to cost and availability of ploughs and spares, also class limitations.Get a two furrow, or a three which can be reduced, match work is predominately two furrow, and there is no point in working your tractor and yourself harder than is needed moving the plough about.
One other thing, it may be to your advantage to contact the Society of Ploughmen, they run judges seminars in various areas of the country, and publish a rule book.
Now, its tin hat time! If you are intending to be a serious competitor, and poss move up from one class to another, then you need a Ransomes plough. Then if you want to do a class change all that would need changing would be the bodies.

hank you for the advice. This forum is proving to be a great resource. I have been offered a Ransomes TS59 with YL bodies, no discs but integral side cutters (I think I know what that means :))

I may wait, as you say, until I have visited some local matches before splashing out. Thanks again.

I would go with what Harry has said, a Ransomes, your 65 and Fergie 2 furrow plough wouldnt be eligible for the true Fergie Class, the plough would but not the tractor so you'd be starting in novice (where it would be legal) and then move up to Vintage Mounted, predominantly a Ransomes orientated class, a Fergie Plough can compete (just) in the right conditions but you'd struggle.
Ransome TS59 on YL's sounds fine.
I was a memeber of the FoFH club but found them in all honesty to be a bunch of old woman, plenty of knowledgable folk on the forum though re repairs etc, they wont give you a huge lot of advice re ploughing, they tend to plough by the Ferguson Ploughing Bible and any other way is just plain wrong, but as a class to compete in, it is great, with some great characters and a lot of fun. I have been doing it for 3yrs, debating as to move up to Vintage Mounted but unsure currently, be warned it is addictive!!!
I have found help and advice from peeps on here more useful re match ploughing questions, there are some very helpful people indeed on this forum, who have been there, done it and are mostly still doing it. It is a great sport to get into.
