what happened to the breed? we bred to holstiens in the 70's because we couldn't find the bulls, the figures used to stack up against the b and w hites, with the exception of calf value and cull value, these now, with sexed semen, and more low cull value xbreds on farms. this has changed.
so everyone says the breed is c##p and we bought 4 gx hfrs- 2 allright, 2 c##p, but there must be some good cattle out there, and progress must have been made in advancing the breed.

Progress has been made. As a guernseyman milking cows in wiltshire I have some Fresian cross guernseys and they are some of the best in the herd! Udders were a problem years ago but the global guernsey breeding plan has corrected this. Modern guernsey cows have great udders and feet and as my middle year boss used to say produce liquid gold!

I bought 40 calves that were a mix of pure Jersey, pure Guernsey and Guernsey X SR at a dispersal sale They called in spring 14. The majority of the jerseys and crosses are still here but the last pure Guernsey went last year. Some of the ped Guernseys were incredibly frail, literally half the width of a good Jersey. There probably are some good ones but I didn't buy any.

Before the break-up of the MMB I attended several meetings of Channel Island cattle breeders, to ascertain whether there were marketing opportunities to be explored. At one such gathering I was sitting by a well known Knight of the Realm (and Guernsey breeder), who"s biggest plus for the Guernsey breed was that it took less of her milk to" colour ones tea as it was very yellow". FFS, no wonder the breed is in decline!:scratchhead:

My one Guernsey dairy cow who is part of the Newlands dairy herd. This is her fourth calf born yesterday, unassisted, by NewPole Harlem. Heifer calf. I’m pleased with it!
