Considering that the reel on my jf900 is pretty narrow I’m wondering would it be able for 20ft of raked heavy first cut? Or am I better stick to single rows. TIA

Ive raked 2 2.8m rows for ours. Needs to be a really good row and no lumps, was ok but quite steady, personally id pick up out of your single 10ft row

JFs don't like lumps and the pick up on a 900 turns faster than some higher capacity forage harvesters. I'd stick to 10fts, if you block the feed rollers you'll lose more time than you'd ever gain.
Grouped 20s are easier to lift than raked 20s but if you haven't got a grouper that bit of information isn't much use to you.

Single rows every time
id go with the single 10 too. even with the reel slowed down I doubt you would have an easytime with 20ft. the 1050 and later jf have the feed rolls opening a different way which they say helps to feed in the crop, but not a 900

So I’m the only one putting 30 foot of whatever crop through a jf, smaller than a 900 too?!

Strangely they also do not like it really dry either. The wilted but still damper grass adds centrifugal force and assists with the blow.

An 850? I've seen one of those struggle with a heavy 10ft, 30ft of heavy first cut is too much for any trailed forage harvester.
It'll depend on what you're calling a heavy crop a good crop for us is over 10 ton/acre where the next man down the road might think half of that Is good depending on what they're used to cutting.
With a 900 you'll be steady away with 20 ft and it'll have to be well raked no lumps I rake a fair bit for a boy with a 1060 and even it doesn't like it in a big crop at times.
We used to rake some when we ran our own 900 years ago and they do chop and blow better with a big feed especially if it's getting a bit dry

Should work away. Lifted 30ft with a 1050 but needs to be a perfect raked bout and steady with the speed. Always found lifting 30ft was that we weren’t down to 1/3rd of the speed more like half.

Ok thanks for the reply’s folks I think I’ll just stick to the single rows as I’m working in west of Ireland and crops do be very heavy most around here go for quantity over quality!!

I can't remember if it was 850 or 900 jf but I used to take 2 10ft rows with a Lely rotande
We used to have a contractor at home with a even older jf, it had very small reel and old acrobat style wheels and he often raked 2 8ft rows, always heavy crops

I've yet to see any machine that likes wet grass or lumps
Granted. But a self propelled will just eat it up at a slower speed. The JF will break

Not really, but I know what you mean. Trailed forager development never kept up with today’s market as the perfect machine would be too expensive and alternatives like decent used S/P’s, bakers and loader wagons have all made off with that market.
