Insects taking over the world?!

Never mind about aphids, pollen and flea beetles, they are natives and will be checked by natural processes to at least some extent. What about the invasive alien insects - only a problem for horticulture at the moment (fruit - spotted wing drosophila; onions/leeks - allium leaf miner and leek moth ) but farmings turn will come especially with climate change making conditions more suitable for Colorado beetle and western corn rootworm.

European corn borer would be a serious problem if it started hitting maize crops in the UK.

Barley- Didn't use deter this autumn as knew we were only 12 months away from no choice. Sprayed late sep barley once as could find significant numbers of aphids and were over HGCA calculator even though i don't like doing it. Clearly should have followed up again in mild autumn as agronomist recommended as have big patches of BYDV.

Regards your above statement @Flat 10 Sprayed our winter barley at least twice for aphids, thought i was wasting my time maybe not now. Think you have more nerve than me, i tend to air on the side of caution and spray just in case don't want to risk BYDV

Had similar problems to you with beans and linseed, so have dropped break crops as not profitable for us and gone for just barley and a small area of wheat.

Would like to spray less which may be better for environment but not always possible and with the removal of the likes of Deter the options are limited.

Lots of cereal flea beetle munching spring barley flag leaves. I can’t remember the last time my jeans got this grubby in one afternoon. I won’t be treating it with any insecticide but I can see why some might be tempted.

Pollen beetle absolutely destroying a few late flowers on Osr. I’m sure I should have biscayered them as protracted flowering in csfb let them cause damage as in sosr. But I didn’t.

This is an open question to all - what extra yield could be added by those flowers and how much would they delay harvest by?? 40 days from the end of flowering to pod maturity

I didn’t really mean those flowers per se but rather the ones that arrived a fortnight after the first ones following the rain. Don’t know whether you can see the FB damage to the pods in my picture. Only good thing is that there are 100s of swifts eating them....
