I've got a new solution to the wool thing
This weekend I'm inviting all the footpath users to enhance the nesting options for the local birdlife
Now that most of the ewes have shed they are going to pick up the wool from my sheep and knit little nests , i have maps showing them where to place the nest for best effect
It's only £12 a go ---but for an extra annual subscription of £42.50 you can sponsor the nest for a whole year --this deal includes online webcam coverage of the nest & a carbon footprint reduction certificate ! It's a bargain
If it goes well i expect i will need staff to help me once the school holidays kick in---any volunteers?

Crikey, i’m Glad I have a dozen wool bags from my early lot, all loaded up in the trailer for delivery tomorrow morning. I’ll be receiving a BACS payment in return, rather than having to beg slave labour to scrape up the wool to make ‘nests’.....

Would I rather not have the bother & expense, which is several times what the wool will come to this year? Yes, probably.:(

On the other hand, we might be building churches with the proceeds again next year, so we’ll have the last laugh then......perhaps.

I would't hold your breath

Have faith!

Wool will never reach the dizzy heights of building houses, churches of cathedrals like it did once upon a time ago... but the prices paid for quality wool WILL increase (y)

Haven’t you got blackies? 30p/kg? Very insulting.. I tipped 5 cuM of scraps and greasy bits onto the muckheap today, unsure what they pay on scraps these days?

F**k no!! I put the Blackies away 13 years ago
BUT their wool is still double the value of Swales

I did say quality wool will be worth something ;)

Harvest a load of bracken and mix it with the scraps. Makes excellent compost, apparently

How much of the UK flock does that apply to?

Well technically it would apply to EVERY wool grower. Quality Swale wool is worth more than the utter shyte as it is right now - just overall it has a far lower value than Cheviot wool...

If we are to be serious about saving the world we need to stop using acrylics from the petro-chemical industry. Wool is the greenest renewable fibre we have

If my wool value went up by a modest x4, it would pay about 60% of the annual rent on this farm, that would help a lot (y)
If I then took other wools into consideration I could switch breeds and maybe almost pay the rent (that's some thought! - and would turn the UK sheep industry on its head)

Places in Australia and NZ (I think can't remember where I read it) now using merino halfbreds as ewes because the Merino wool is worth so much and they get the lambs too. Makes sense if you can do it I suppose.

I remember reading an article earlier in the year that Australian wool has increased in value quite a bit in the last year. Mostly going to China IIRC.
