Stubble burning

Aaah yes, set fire to a small bale of straw with a pirelli (scrap) tyre on top which is fastened by a long chain to a small tractor (135) then when well alight proceed to drag said burning tyre backwards and forwards dropping off dollops of burning rubber as you go, across the desired stubble field which had already been crisped up by a spray of paraquat.( See ICI pamhlet ****197 ??).
Gets an excellent clean start for DD OSR.

NB Pirelli was a textile based tyre and didn't end up dropping pieces of wire all over the field ...as per michelin X

Actually, it was an excellent means of clearing trash before DD or early min-till operations!
In it's day a good burn was worth a pint of Gramoxone (yes, we did everything in pints/acre back then:whistle:) and a pass with a pig-tail drag.
On strong old Lincolnshire clay you could run through it with a Level-lift and drill it without too much trouble.

When it went well it was a very satisfying job. When it went wrong it could get a bit scary:nailbiting::nailbiting:.

Saved a lot of time and diesel, but the job got a bit out of hand (mainly folk burning when the wind was wrong/too much at a time/etc,etc) and (probably rightly) it got banned.
It's heyday was mainly in the pre Q-cab days and you used to go home looking like a coal miner after a day working burnt stubbles:rolleyes:.

We used to spread the straw on the combine, and then usually after baling the headland and removing the bales, I cultivated the headland.. Then burn into the wind. Sprayer full of water to hand!!
