Big variation round here. Dad and his bro did a lot of ripping out hedges and piping sheughs in the 60's and early 70's, at a time when there weren't track diggers to handle it. The sound of crowbarring out stones sounds fun:unsure:. 2-3 acres was typical size. Our biggest field is only 14 acres, but dad knocked six into one to make it. Around the yard he let the fields be smaller because of paddock grazing the cows. Typically 6 acre average. Some farms haven't touched the 2-3 acre fields. You can see it in the aerial photos.

Field shape is definitely a big problem here. River boundaries, hillsides, roads etc. It's rare to have a field with two parallel sides. Points in a big field sometimes seem worse than a wee one. They go on forever.

Finished a field last night for a neighbour 1st cut, 16 acre, square and flat. The 10 ft's were like 30 ft's. Took 3 hrs to mow with 2 mowers at 7-8 kph and a Long time to draw in.:wtf:

Recently applied to council to enlarge fields from 3-4 to 7-8 acres. Chap came out and walked hedges, didn’t seem unduly concerned, but two weeks later letter came and I was refused permission to take 90% out as they appear on the 1841 tythe map of the locality.FFS! Obviously now going to appeal at some cost.

Would have thought it was a foregone conclusion that most if not all hedges present today were there in 1841. I know I'd expect that.
