For most farms you really need some sort of breakdown, acres planted using each method.
You could have a 10 acre farmer ploughing for veg, and a 10000 acre farmer mintill, 500 acre guy doing a bit of everything.

You'll get a total acreage and true percentage then, rather than a show of hands.

Ideally yes but asking simple questions is ......... simpler !

Over simplification is misleading. I don’t understand why categorizing farms by cultivation technique is useful. Especially when most people use a range of methods.

its not supposed to be useful - its just interesting to ask

If I asked how exactly many acres did you established using the various listed establishments methods last year then 99% of people (myself inc couldn't be bothered answering and maybe in many case don't even know the exact answer and the response form would be both complex and need processing to report any results ........................ and even then someone would find a reason why it wasnt valid !

That’s a nice simple survey. How about repeating it annually to see what the trend is and the rate of change?

^ this ! - I think you have to keep it simple (maybe overly simple sometimes) to get anything from it

as you say if the same question was asked again next year and over several years you could see it the was any trend towards or away from any particular method

Half ploughed, for wheat after spring oats. (bury stubbles, break tramlines up a bit )
Half scratch till, spring oats after scratch till mustard, (no stubbles to bury)
