some fatstock markets are a joke TBO its a job to know why the auctioneer turns up as they don't run the show
I use to buy calves at market when I started in farming, the local market had a proper buyers ring that decided who had what as soon as it came in the ring . I took a month of abuse & threats before I could buy any calves. Do any of you honestly think the fat market is any different?
Store market works because it's mainly individual farmers buying.

They have to look after the buyers they have left though. If no buyers, no trade, no sheep / cattle.

I think more markets will go in the next 10-15 years and in 20-25 yrs we’ll basically be working for the big processors / retailers. Producing what they want, to the spec they want, at the price they set. A small financial penalty now by supporting your local market would ensure the survival of a competitive industry in the future.. but as many point out not all can afford to do this..
I know they have to look after the buyers but let them run the show ?
I think the auctioneer should be in charge what do you think ?
I think the price they are knocked down for should be the price paid not a few quid less after objection and knock them down again what do you think ?
you are right in the second part of your post

as said above lack of competition, buyers with half a dozen accounts so they are not bidding against one another so more or less a syndicate

Where’s the competition going to come from.
There’s only 4or 5 supermarkets in the country and less and less independent butchers. What do you suggest?
To me it seems obvious that the beef and lamb job will go the same way as milk and chicken. Producers will need contracts with buyers with agreed price structures before you start. Then you decide if you want to be involved or not.

there is a collection centre not far from here run by stags auctioneers, we have found it works well for lambs, not always the best price but its live weight and you get a price before you leave home

Yep I use it that most weeks, works well not many weeks have the Auction Marts been in front, 10/15mins in a queue then off home not all day wasted in a Market.open dial weights and as you say dependent on weight and fatness...that's if they are to fat.. you know exactly what your going to get before you load..how simple

We need as farmers to be buying into processing, until we do everyone has us by the...
A recent survey shows something like 85% of shoppers trust British farmers, so it would be a selling point if we controlled more of the supply chain.
It's not something we can do over night but we need a 10-15 year plan. Buying a small percentage of several different abbattiors would be a start , using AHBD levy money perhaps or collecting it in the same way ( a small levy per cow/ lamb ).
