Cyclist, another close call today

Last time I was in Germany was when I was still a schoolkid and I was struck by all the cycle lanes, meaning it was safe to cycle pretty much anywhere. Some ran alongside roads, but others didn't, especially the ones between the little villages we stayed in.
Rather than spending billions on hs2 I would rather see money spent on cycle lanes lanes on a large scale.

No matter what we drive or ride, courtesy and common sense from all parties is usually all that is required.
I try to use both whether driving a tractor or a car. When I used to ride a bike I hope I did likewise.

One thing I do admit to doing however is repaying the very occasional overtly arrogant and inconsiderate cyclists who insist on riding two or three abreast and holding me up on lanes and B roads, by just staying behind them after they have eventually seen fit to give a quick hand signal to pass them.

I just stay behind them, and I stay behind them Sir, and they don’t like it Captain Mainwaring, they do not like it Sir when I stay behind them you see Sir. But they can get as annoyed as they like Sir, just as I have been annoyed Sir, very annoyed indeed you see Sir, sitting behind them for miles while they choose to be ignorant pillocks holding up traffic just because they have the right to ride two abreast and sod everyone else.

They don’t like it at all, but if that arrogant minority of cyclists want to hold up everyone else, then just sitting on their tail for a mile or two, if you have the time, is a wonderfully legal method of payback with compound interest.
If the road is too narrow to be overtaken safely whilst riding singly, the car overtaking must be able to cross the white line and return safely
In this case riders may be two abreast as car will have to spend less time on opposite side of the road and can therefore overtake more easily.

Some of you grumpy anti cyclists maybe ought to try cycling around a bit and you'd see what cyclists have to put up with. I have to say in my experience the vast majority of other round users do show respect and give room to cyclists - the op sounds like a charactature of of the rest!
I'll not be out on the roads on a bike, I'm not mental. I'll walk if I have to.

Cycle lanes are often shared use with pedestrians, multidirectional and therefore often dangerous to ride on at more than walking pace..
If you want to ride at 20 plus mph then the road is usually the only place to go if you want the only life at risk to be your own

Some of the "cycle lanes" round here a literally just footpaths that have been retasked, often they are very narrow not helped by overgrown hedges and some even have driveway access so cars reversing across them - which is why a lot of serious cyclists avoid them

Most of the roads are so poor around here ( Suffolk ) cyclists have to cycle well out in the road to avoid potholes, debris, Red Bull cans etc
So count to Ten, take care, and don't hurt anyone...

Often thought how difficult it must be if your actions ( non fault or otherwise ) on the road have led to injury or worse.

If the cyclists werent morons they would have pulled over

If they had any sense of self preservation they would have done so.
Most of the hospital/ambulance programmes on TV show a HUGE number of cyclists being killed or injured.
They should have to have some kind of insurance at the very least.

I don't see it mentioned here but a cyclist died early this week after an accident with a combine in Northumberland , I have no idea of the circumstances involved or the wrights and wrongs of it and LETS NOT START A DISCUSSION ABOUT IT HERE but one guy is not going home to his family and I assume a combine driver is pretty shaken up at the very least by the episode.
There are rights and wrongs on both sides but it's sobering to think that two peoples lives have changed in only a few short seconds so on that note we should all be more tolerant .

I have been undertaken on the combine by mopeds and bikes, gave me a hell of a start , i could easily have cruushed them without realising .

I, and 10 other rather elderly cyclists are descending on South Queensferry this weekend. I have not been on the bike since the trip last year and we plan to do 40 miles a day.
My speed varies from 3mph while pushing uphill to 40mph downhill so hopefully the Lothian harvest has finished and I do not have to repeatedly overtake tractors and combines.

Having also had a motorbike when younger then I always ride assuming I will come off worse in any collision

Could it be that the people on here that are allways having problems with cyclists, runners etc maybe need to be looking at their own driving behaviour. I drive now at least 20k miles a year and at one time did a lot more, I drive tractors, cars, vans on all types of roads and despite getting around a fair bit I just don't seem have these issues like you guys - maybe I'm just lucky? .
I'm similar, farmer, hgv driver, cyclist, motorcyclist. I find with the last two the best way is to ride,as if everyone else is trying to kill you.

Strange response. I quite enjoy the variety , walking, clycling, quad bike, tractor, Landie, car etc
What's strange? Have you read the thread and numerous others like it in the past? Cycling must be one of the most dangerous forms of transport out there.
Hence if you see me out on a bicycle, you will know I have really lost my mind.
