Hi I am new on here and just after advice really! I am almost 50 and am thinking about a totally new career in agriculture. I do have an advantage of coming from a farming background but I am the only earner in my household living in rented property and have enquired at Hadlow college regarding suitable courses for mature students. My career background is admin and retail and I am fed up with working with large groups of people and would very much like to venture into the outside world. I don't have a problem getting muddy or changing weather in the seasons and wondered about the best way of getting into this. I would ideally like to start off caring for calves/lambs but do need to gain experience first obviously. I would very much appreciate any advice particularly from women who have done this already. Thanks

You mean there are highly paid parts of farming???

Yes and they don't do the agriculture bit in Canterbury only in Tonbridge

It's not about the money. The love of rural life far outweighs a higher paid job where there is a lot of stress

Just go after jobs in your area, you never know what might be offered. The bar really isn't that high. A chap I know was recently interviewing the only applicant he had for a stockman/stockwomans job that could speak English. He thought the fella was a bit dull but OK. Then the applicants phone went off with an incoming text and he ignored the employer until he had answered the text in the middle of the interview! He hasn't got the job.

Once I have got a bit more experience and know I definitely want to pursue things them will do so thanks for info. Not surprised he didn't give this chap the job though

There will be a hell of a lot of stress when the calves starting dieing that you are looking after for someone else!!
