Seems to vary a lot depending what county your in, to be fair the roads are not to bad round here but a tractor that will do 30 mph don't get opened up to often.
The chap with the van that puts circles round the pot holes makes me laugh, in the old days they would send the lads out to use there own initiative and fill the holes in not much longer than it takes to draw round them, but now they seem to have to pay the chap with the van, there was one parked in our gateway on Thursday for a few hours feck knows what he was doing but it must have been important as its all progress

Actual they felt quite good to me, unless they've deteriorated hugely in 2 years
Possibly the worst stretch of SH1 is the bit that you avoided - Gore to Milton.
Much of it is simply old corduroy horse roads, metalled and then sealed over - average in a car, bloody awful in a cab-over truck ? all the old logs used in the corduroy roads decomposed at different rates, is the problem there.
Once you get out of the South Otago bit, it's OK.
Unfortunately we have a whole lot of roading, power network etc, but very few inhabitants to share the costs via rates or line charges

still worth it to have a bit of space!

And, it's nice and cool - it was so cold this morning, I think I saw a Socialist with his hands in his own pockets!

Guess you guys will have to go to gravel and dirt roads like us countries that decided it’s not worth attempting to pave every surface.

Then we can listen to you moan about washboard and dust instead :ROFLMAO:
Yeah, Australian roads ... and put up signs with something like ' summer road' on them , or words to that affect. Iirc.

The parish lengthsman is gone now, cant be afforded apparently.
The last one seemed to have lost his plan of bits that needed cleaning. So i do one or 2 around about now or else it overflow / floods into our gateways instead of the drains, , or ruins the tarmac.
Last time j saw him and his nice new council truck, he was parked up for a long time reading the paper, when he left thd bit he was parked at still wasnt shovelled enough, we had to finish it off . Wasnt hard job.

Road not maintained.

Road impassable when wet.

Caution: dustbowls.

All signs I’ve seen in various countries that don’t have paved roads. And before UK folks say they have many roads during floods that are impassable when wet, keep in mind we get like 6” of rain in a summer. When roads are impassable here, it’s not because of the water, it’s the mud ?

There’s also the ones that say “Warning: No fuel for next X00’s of kms” Not as much to do with road conditions as with planning ahead.

It’s a big country... just because it’s fairly flat where I am doesn’t mean there aren’t areas that can give the UK a run for its money with hills. Those signs sound similar to Hidden Intersection, Hidden Approach and Blind Curve signs.

Plus the No Stopping Allowed: Rockslide Zone and No Stopping Allowed: Avalanche Zone signs.

Not sure when a music festival in the city has to do with road signs though... doubt any of us will argue that our traffic is as dumb as UK traffic. We don’t live in countries with ridiculous population numbers ?

Yeah, I generally take the gravel roads over the tar if possible.
About 1/3 of local roads are sealed, the rest are just metal/shingle/gravel, they could really use an extra grader but at least gravel tends to keep tourists off.
Or, under 7mph
