Sky+ box dead

Does anyone know if you can just obtain a SKY+HD box elsewhere and stick my viewing card in it, or are they locked to cards or accounts?

Ring sky again and say what’s happened and that it’s made you realise how little you use it so you can’t really justify the monthly fee and you want to cancel.

If I can just put my card in another box, then I can find another box easily enough. I did try pushing the 'I really can't afford to pay any more' card last night, but felt stiff resistance. They are ringing me back this evening when I've had time to think about it. I'll have to try to get past the Indian fella reading answers from a card this time.
