Sky+ box dead

We had a bird strike on a cable over a stubble field yesterday, so the mains voltage was dropped for a while before we could get it turned off. Nothing seems to be damaged, apart from one fried goose and my 10 yr old Sky+HD box.

Sky have kindly offered me an upgrade to Sky Q, for an additional fee of course, or pay for an expensive engineer's visit and a refurbed Sky+ box. I don't really want to be pushed into a £40/month contract for super duper Sky Q features that I don't particularly want, but would like to keep Sky.

Does anyone know if you can just obtain a SKY+HD box elsewhere and stick my viewing card in it, or are they locked to cards or accounts?

Ring sky again and say what’s happened and that it’s made you realise how little you use it so you can’t really justify the monthly fee and you want to cancel.
You’ll be surprised what they can offer

This.

I speak to them for Mother at the end of the contract with Sky each time. 40% percent off the last time.
They did her Sky Q for £30 one off and £13 a month if i recall.

I've only had 6 months of 'contract' since I finished 2 years of the offer given when threatening to leave.;)

If I can just put my card in another box, then I can find another box easily enough. I did try pushing the 'I really can't afford to pay any more' card last night, but felt stiff resistance. :D They are ringing me back this evening when I've had time to think about it. I'll have to try to get past the Indian fella reading answers from a card this time.

The card needs to be married to the box, just a case of phone up sky and they do their wizardry (y)

The good news is that we’re out of contract (just), so on to ‘cancellations’ tomorrow morning.....?

Thanks to all that have offered their old boxes. I’ll see where I get with blagging a freebie first though.:)

The bad news is you have to give 30 days notice to cancel
